Even the NRA is now admitting that the ammo shortage and resulting
higher prices was and remains due to hoarding by the public. Sorta
blows a hole through all the government "conspiracy" theories that at
least one individual here was promoting.

I'm kinda hoping for a *huge* all-American gunfight between *all* the
private citizen ammo hoarders, one that lasts until the last round is
fired. It'll be loud, flashy, and it'll improve the gene pool. I've only
got four to six boxes each of .22LR, 45ACP, 45LC, and a few boxes of
shotgun shells, so I'm not hoarding. :)

I'm not either, even thought I have probably 4 to 6 crates of the same and more calibers you have.

I've bought mine over the years,.

Okay. How much ammo is in your typical "crate"? My .22LR boxes have 100
rounds in them. There are 20 rounds in each box of 45s.

The current round of "hording" ammo started due to concerns that
political pressures would restrict both gun ownership and ammo
availability. Then the closure of the only lead smelting plant in the
US in 2010 led many to erroneously believe that lead would no longer be
available for ammunition manufacturing. This is not true. Virtually
*all* the lead used for ammo is from recycled supplies ranging from
automotive wheel weights, fishing weights and ballast. There's a
surplus of lead around and the ammo manufacturers won't run out anytime
soon.

I remember when I first started going to the range. I didn't have much
ammo for each gun and would typically shoot up whatever supply I had
knowing I could easily restock. At the height of the current shortage,
I'd buy whatever I could find, so I guess I contributed to the hoarding.
It seems to be easing now. The shelves at my favorite gun shop are
getting full again and quantity restrictions on some calipers have ended.

I feel a whole lot better about going to the range and shooting 15

cent shots than those guys who are shooting at 75 cents a round and

Greg that's the way I look at it. I really don't go shooting ofr the sake of burning up brass, but several years ago (about 25), I bought govt. surplus .223 at .14c. a round in bulk. I thought it was worth copping a couple thousand count.

"Dirty" Chinese 7.62x39 surplus? 1500 rd. per crate at .07c. a shot. I figured that was worth 3 crates.

political pressures would restrict both gun ownership and ammo
availability.

I don't "stock up" on ammo. Don't use it.
Had an uncle that would stock up his favorite beer when it went on sale.

There is plenty of ammo available. The issue most people have is that it is expensive. If you
want to buy 10,000 rounds of 5.56 you can have it on your door step by the end of the week.

Here's a great big "atta boy".. cause you really got me good
there....
what a hero:)

Thanks. I thought you'd appreciate having some reliable information.

Do you even know what a hypocrite you seem here? I doubt it...

Golly gee. That hurt, coming from you.

Is it important to you to dismiss those you don't like? Does it mean a
lot to you to make sure you let me know that?

It was a simple question... but I can see I am wasting my time with you.

Thought I would give **** a shot here for a few months... Been pretty
good for about 4 months.. even harry has calmed down, but I can see that
you are still here for the same thing you said you were here for last
fall, and it's the same thing harry is here for...

Like I said, simple question... later..

I'm just here for the grins. :)

Any and all of your alleged advice falls on deaf ears.

I had a Ruger .177 pellet rifle but recently gave it to my son-in-law.
It shoots lead pellets at a muzzle velocity of 1200 fps and the "high
velocity" type pellets at 1400 fps. When fired, it is louder than my
..22LR rifle (also a Ruger).

===

That's because the pellet is breaking the sound barrier and creating a
shock wave. If you could tune the velocity down to a bit under 1000
fps it would be a lot quieter.

Gamo is making silenced pellet guns these days. Since it is not a
"firearm" they can put a .22 style suppressor on it without running
afoul of NFA34

I am not sure why the pellet gun is louder than the .22LR rifle. Both
have supersonic velocities as the round leaves the barrel. The pellet
gun might have a slightly higher velocity depending on what type of ammo
is used in the .22 rifle (standard or high velocity). It can't be mass
because the .22 is bigger. Beats me.

Of course the velocity at 25 yards or more is going to be much different
between the two.

It depends on the .22 ammo. I have some 65 gr .22rf that is pretty
quiet out of a rifle. Better than my Sheridan .177 pumped up to oh
wow.

My understanding though is that the "crack" is the round going
supersonic as it leaves the barrel. Breaking the sound barrier thing.
