John (Gun Nut) H. .357 gives you a performance advantage over the .45 and 9mm. 10mm/.40 closed that gap. A performance advantage? Funny stuff. Shot a "10" one afternoon at the range. Just bloody awful. Don't like .40 S&W much, either. Do like the .367 mag in an S&W 27-2. --------------------------------------------- I know very little about comparisons of different kinds of ammo and even less about how to judge their "performance". Terms like "stopping power" really don't mean much, IMO, because there are so many other factors involved. However, from basic physics, energy equals mass times velocity squared. Some smart German guy figured that out. So, the velocity of a round has much more to do with the resultant imparted energy than the mass of the slug, assuming they are somewhat similar. The table in the provided link indicates that a typical .357 round has a much higher muzzle velocity than a typical 45 round. So, if the German guy is right, the energy on the target is higher with the 357. Oh, I am aware of the different properties of some different rounds, but in shooting paper targets at a typical range distance, it doesn't matter much to me. Perhaps the original poster is talking about the ability to pierce and destroy flesh? Why shoot anything bigger than a .22, if your goal is only to put targets in paper? Why sell the cheap 9mm and buy a .45? Are you thinking of destroying flesh, or just putting pencil sized holes in paper? John (Gun Nut) H. Interesting question. I'm looking forward to hearing his answer. Krause doesn't like the hard questions. That's why he purports to have me filtered. John (Gun Nut) H. -- Hope you're having a great day! |

The 10mm can get you over 600 ft/lbs ME as will a .357 The 9mm, even in the +P loads are almost half that at around 360 and the .45 +P squeaks out close to 500. There used to be a big advantage in the bullets you could use in a wheel gun but these days they have high performance bullets for SAs so it just gets down to what you can load in the case and what SAAMI will bless. Wow...I could knock those empty sodapop cans over with more force! What advantage does your 45 have over the 9s that you had so lovingly tweaked, and bragged about frequently. |

Wow...I could knock those empty sodapop cans over with more force! Like John says, if you are just poking holes in paper or plinking cans, maybe a .22 is more appropriate ... or maybe a BB gun. They make some real nice CO2 guns these days and a lot of people like Air Soft guns. My dad made a BB gun range on the basement when I was about 10. It used an old piece of carpet as a backstop with a stick of "K" gutter under it that recycled the BBs quite well. They collected in a bucket at the end. Your error is in buying into Herring's explanation of why I buy or sell anything. I stated I bought the .45 ACP revolver because I long wanted a ..45 double action revolver, not because I wanted to shoot it at the range or use it as a carry weapon or even as a household defense weapon. I have firearms more than adequate for paper and can plinking, including a cherry Ruger Mark III with fancy wood grips, a sight rail and a red dot sight I occasionally use. |

I guess if I lived down there I'd want something that'd kill pythons and boas on the first shot. They usually use shotguns with bird shot (7 1/2 or 8) It might be tough hitting a moving snake with a handgun. You really don't want one of them to bite you. There is no venom but they do have a mouth full of backward facing teeth. I've seen the pictures. Horrendous looking monster mouths. I'd want an M-79 with a buckshot round. My son in law has been out there with the hunters as the SFWMD observer. He says the hardest part is finding them in the first place and when you see it, you have to figure out which end is which since you just see a little part of the body most of the time They usually just shoot the part they see and get ready for a quick follow up shot when they see the head. The hard core rednecks will catch them alive and wrestle them down but that is not the typical "guv'mint" hunter unless it is a herpetologist doing a study.. Do they eat them, too? Do they taste like...chicken? :) |

Muzzle velocity with regular pellets is 1,250 fps. Using the lightweight alloy pellets it is 1,400 fps. Accurate as hell too. Not a single can has survived. Only problem is it's as loud or louder than my .22LR Ruger single 10 revolver because the exiting pellet is supersonic and you get the "crack" as the sound barrier is breeched. I bought it to shoot on my property without making any neighbors nervous, but it's loud enough to probably catch their attention. No complaints so far though. |
