I'm thinking of buying my first boat and I'm interested in a 36' Hunter. I
asked for a quote from United Marine Underwriters, but I was declined due to the size of the boat and no previous boat ownership experience. Does anyone know of an insurance company that will help 1st time big boat owners? Rick |

Try Boat/US.
They have three levels of insurance, the difference being in how extras are covered, and whether depreciation is computed. So if you get the cheap version, don't complain when they tell you your dinghy outboard was depreciated below the deductible level. They are very good in disaster situations - my cousins had their boat helicopter'd out of a swamp the day after Hurricane Bob. "Rick Thompson" wrote in message ... Thanks for the reply. At this point I'd just like to be able to get basic
insurance so I can buy a boat. I've taken classes (I have my ASA Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering certification) and I have sailed big boats with captains several times. I am familiar with biger boats, but obviously not having owned one I need more experience. I like the bigger boats, I'd hate to have to buy a smaller boat just to get experience "Owning a boat". Thanks again for your reply, Rick "Jeff Morris" wrote in message news ![]() Try Boat/US. I thought those were the kind of courses that insurance companies liked their customers to take. Have you tried another company yet? John. |

BoatUS gave me a very reasonable quote, I'll be going with them.

I just insured with Boats US. A very pleasant experience. None of the
usual stuff about .. .too old, too little, too big etc. etc. etc. And the cost is excellent! MST |

I just got stuck with the "too little" excuse from Boat/US -- and I already have one boat insured with them! I tried to insure my new Adirondack Guideboat. Since it "doesn't have an adequate means of propulsion," they declined to insure it. They just don't insure rowing boats! I wrote back and asked why not (about a month ago), and haven't yet gotten a response. USAA had no objections, though... |

No offence but I wouldn't insure you either. Perhaps talk to them again and
do a reputable course that will gain you a the relevant competency certificates in your country. Then they may be more interested. DP "Rick Thompson" wrote in message ... Rick:
The first step is to gain some credibility. You can do this by completing some sailing certification courses. They get you started on the right foot and also assure the Insurance company that you're determined to leave the dock and return safely. The ASA or American Sailing Association is where my wife and I started years ago. It was the best time and money we could have spent. We completed about 5 courses each, sailed a couple years and then Boat US covered our first boat, a 1985 30' Islander. Keep your enthusiasm and keep going. It's really worth it.
