For example, what if you lived in a town that had an Islamic majority, and everywhere you went there were Islamic religious symbols on display. After a while you would probably come around to the view that Islam was the "official" religion and that everything else, Well, not if you were in America and ever went to school.. including your own beliefs, was merely tolerated if at all. Much of this debate started in the NYC suburbs that have a very significant Jewish population. They rightfully took offense at being surrounded by Christian religious symbols, especially those on government property. They really didn't "take offense" to the baby Jesus, it's only fringe groups and liars that say they are "offended" by a couple of crossed pieces of wood...
