I have a 21' fixed keel and am new to this. Launching is extremely difficult
and have looked at different solutions including using a chain. I saw on the
Potter site that a few of their customers have suggested using Extend a
Hitch. Has anyone used this? (I'm waiting for my request to join their forum
to be approved to ask questions there.) I checked out the web site,
www.extendahitch.com and it looks pretty simple. Any other suggestions
anyone have? I have to put my tires in the water and sometimes I still can't
launch, especially at shallow ramps.

I usta get water in my tank until I stuuffed a rag in the gas
hole;-)

Got a couple a chunks a steel at the salvage yard, 20 bucks or so
for enough square steel to do a 30' boat, depending on the ramp.
A welder made a sliding mount for 5.00 an hour, and it jams with
boat on / off, etc.

I have to bolt on a hitch but only fingertight, and change
coupler extensions, etc, but works OK, except the truck has
insufficient oomph to make the boat 'walk on water'. It's ok for
launch, and mostly someone is handy to give me a pull getting
out. I always have a chain with hooks handy. The next guy in
line is always eager to help.

Need more slack at the rear stowage position, more room for the
trailer frame to flex, y'know? Mabey next year, I won't need the
hammer?

You can make a simple extension out of a box section of steel. Say ten feet
long for the sake of this argument. Add a ball to one and a couplink to the
other. Once you get the water, remove the trailer from the vehicle and
insert the extension. I would recommend you also include safety chain
fittings also.. just in case.

In tidal areas I have seen telescopic ends on trailers. They are a great
idea but probably a little difficulty to convert an already constructed
trailer.

My trailer has one built in. It extends about 10 ft and I launched my 25
(2'6" draft with board up) before the truck wheels hit the top of the ramp.
Some of the guys at my dinghy club have the bolt on extensions. They need
them cause they are too lazy raise the daggerboards on c&C SR21's all the
way up. The extensions seem to work all right though. They bolt on to the
trailer tongue.
