Amy Wood, the wife of Idaho state Rep. Fred Wood (R), was airlifted to
a Utah hospital on Saturday night after an explosion in their home
caused second degree burns to her hands and face, according to the
Magic Valley Times-News.

The Woods were reportedly eating dinner when, according to Burley,
Idaho Fire Chief Keith Martin, “they heard a sound like a 747 coming
from the basement.” A gun safe, which was housed in the basement under
the patio on which Mrs. Wood was standing, apparently exploded,
lifting the patio slab off the ground and collapsing the roof. The
patio slab on which Mrs. Wood was apparently standing reportedly
collapsed into the basement after the explosion.

Mr. Wood is said to have sustained minor injuries. The cause of the
explosion is still under investigation.

I hope she fully recovers but I also hope they realize this was
probably God talking to them through their gun safe.

I bought an old safe at a garage sale and it is sitting in my garage. I
don't know if anything is in it because the seller had inherited it from
his father and apparently the old man died without giving his son the
combination. It had been sitting in his garage unopened for about 20
years.

I'm pretty sure the safe isn't full of guns. Maybe it is full of money.
If my garage explodes, I'll have to reconsider whether it was full of
bullets.

I have no idea how to get the safe open. I don't even know why I bought
it, since I don't think I have anything worth putting in a safe. I
wonder if I can find a "safecracker" on Craig's List. Damn thing weighs
about 400 pounds, took four of us to get it out of my pickup truck and
into the garage.

Call local locksmith to get started. Offer 20% of whatever's in the safe. Or more.

Most safe crackers use brute force methods which are easily duplicated
if you have the right tools and know where to drill or cut. You might
be able to find a book on Amazon or at your local library. If the
manufacturer is still in business they might be able to help you if
you can convince them that you're legit. Tools of the trade are
things like acetylene cutting torches, carbide drills, cold chisels,
hand sledges, etc.

Yeah, I was gonna' say.. Not sure if the old "guy with the stethoscope"
stereotype is really practical anymore. I see them "crack" safes on some
late night reality tv and they literally "crack" them Like Wayne said,
with torches, drills, chisels, etc...

If the combination has not been changed, the manufacturer if still in
business could supply the numbers.

I second John's suggestion. Depending on model, there may be a trivial
trick to open it. They may not want you to watch.

If you are going "brute force" a diamond blade in a cut off saw will
get in there but the blade may cost more than the contents are worth,
particularly if you have to rent the saw.
Don't go for a frontal assault, the back or bottom may be the weakest
part.
Set up your phone/camera and put it on You Tube. It can be like Al
Capone's vault.

---------------------------
Brute force may have other consequences. Depending on the age of the safe.
Old safes had a tear gas container that would trigger under certain
conditions. Lots have a glass plate that will shatter and then a spring
releases a secondary lockup.
