http://www.winknews.com/Local-Florida/2011-12-28/Boat-sinks-off-Key-West-2-people-rescued-return-to-Ft-Myers

According to the news report they pulled the anchor from the stern
after it became stuck.

"We put it back on the stern to bring it up and we had power on it
and when we had let go, it snatched back and the waves filled the
stern up with water"

It's not clear if it was a low transom boat or not but it sounds like
it might have been.

They were saved by their EPIRB and life raft.

It is a recipe for disaster to shorten the scope of the anchor line
and tug from the stern. Hell, anchoring from the stern isn't a good
idea, either, and for them same reasons.

I wonder how close to being drug under water the stern was, before the
stretchy rode yanked them back.

This guy isn't "unlucky", he's just stupid.

In all seriousness the incident does raise important questions about
what type of boat was involved. Pulling a stuck anchor from the
stern is obviously a dubious practice but most 33 footers would not be
sunk as a result. Was the transom too low or motor well protection
not in place? Insufficient or non-existent self bailing scuppers?
Insuficient protection from cabin down flooding?

Since we don't yet know what the boat in question was, perhaps the real
issue is the stupidity of trying to raise a *really stuck* anchor from
the stern or under many circumstances from the bow. There are techniques
that can help, but sometimes the damned just isn't going to come loose
no matter what you do from the surface. If you are doing natural reef or
artificial structure fishing, you're going to get a hard stuck anchor
from time to time. Rather than risking the boat or ripping off deck
hardware not designed for the stress of pulling up a hard stuck anchor,
the best bet is to cut the line.

When I fished the St. Augustine inlet area, I knew I'd lose a couple of
anchors there a season. After the first season, I stopped buying the
more expensive "Danforth" branded anchors and went for the less
expensive imitators.

I like the first comment:

"I can tell you this much, if the insurance refurbishes my boat, the
first thing I will have done is the transmom being re-done and a
outboard engine tray added.

The salvage company operator stated that 90% of the swamped boats he
recovers are boats that have notched tansoms, I am shocked at how easily
my boat rolled."

Guess it's a trade off. There are always problems when you use the wrong
or a poorly designed tool. People get hurt.

This must just be a Pinellas County thing. We have had two of these in
a couple years. (the football guys)
I assume you watched this in the news too. The mate said the rode
"snapped back" implying it dragged the boat backward and down.
They must have really had a strain on it, probably taking a running
start.
It really sounds like a roadrunner cartoon to me.

===

I wonder how many more of these "anchored by the stern sinkings" have
occurred that we've never heard about because the guys were lost?

We got an anchor caught under a log down in Little Shark River a few
years ago on the trawler. I locked off the chain and pulled it out
with the engines in reverse, probably generating close to 5,000 pounds
of thrust. The bow must have dipped down at least a foot before the
anchor broke free and that's with a 70,000 pound boat.

Oooohweeee...the sig apparently annoys flajim, aka Oscar.

Actually, whiney, er, wayney, er, whatever, virtually all
my lifetime of memories are very pleasant. In fact, they've actually
gotten more pleasant as I have re-connected with a slew of friends
from my youthful days in Connecticut. Our annual reunion next year is
going to be so large, we may have to hold it at a nightclub or a hotel
ballroom. Until this year, I'd only been in touch with about two dozen
old buds...now that number is well over 100.

You're a funny boy, wayney...and very very selective in whom you try to
castigate. Most of your trolls and petty insults are aimed at those to
the left of you, and you give most of your dirtbag rightie buddies a
hall pass.

So, best wishes for the new year, fella...

Since we don't yet know what the boat in question was, perhaps the
real issue is the stupidity of trying to raise a *really stuck* anchor
from the stern or under many circumstances from the bow. There are
techniques that can help, but sometimes the damned just isn't going to
come loose no matter what you do from the surface. If you are doing
natural reef or artificial structure fishing, you're going to get a
hard stuck anchor from time to time. Rather than risking the boat or
ripping off deck hardware not designed for the stress of pulling up a
hard stuck anchor, the best bet is to cut the line.

When I fished the St. Augustine inlet area, I knew I'd lose a couple
of anchors there a season. After the first season, I stopped buying
the more expensive "Danforth" branded anchors and went for the less
expensive imitators.

A couple - EACH SEASON? I've left ONE behind in 20+ years of boating.
You obviously don't know how to anchor properly in the first place.
Choosing the right location is the first step - the one you missed.

Bull****. You are a right-wing "corporationist."

Ahh, then here's a deal you won't be able to resist. Beginning Sunday,
day one of 2012, I'll refrain from what I perceive as violating your
"rules of decency," so long as you refrain from attempting to insult me
or my family members directly or indirectly *and* you continuously

According to the news report they pulled the anchor from the stern
after it became stuck.

"We put it back on the stern to bring it up and we had power on it
and when we had let go, it snatched back and the waves filled the
stern up with water"

It's not clear if it was a low transom boat or not but it sounds like
it might have been.

They were saved by their EPIRB and life raft.

I like it! :)

You like it that two guys might have drowned?

Oh for ****'s sake Harry, you just have to make yourself heard, don't
you? You could have drown in the shower, assuming you take one once in

2. What little interest I have in this newsgroup continues to decline.
Hell, I don't even read most of the posts of the assholes here, much

Many years ago a friend of mine had a [factory] jet boat with a Chevy
454. It was the same way, he never sunk it, but he couldn't pull off
an appreciable amount of power quickly without a foot high stern wave
drenching everybody in the aft seats.

That just brought back a memory of the boat the family up the street had
when I was a kid (they were considered "rich" even in our town back
then). They had an 18 foot boat with dual 454's. Yep, it was green, had
Batmobile type front windscreens, fins on the back and went like a
frekin' bat out of hell. I remember the boat was called a "Spoiler". Not
sure if that was the manufacturer, or the model. I remember there were
supposedly a very limited number of these boats made though. We used to
wake board behind it at Congamond Lake in Mass...

If you accept the "deal," I suspect you'll be very busy here. If you
don't accept the deal, you'll just be proving your hypocrisy.

That's the deal. Take it or leave it.

Vote Republican, and join in the GOP's unhinged attacks
on Planned Parenthood, the HPV vaccine,

Can we assume that you will drop your inflammatory sig lines as well?
Why not extend the invitation to everyone; but first you need to change
the wording to include everyone instead of just you and your family
member. Also, I do have a problem with "what I perceive". Can you change
that so that we can all play this game on a "level playing field"?

We know you like to carefully word things so that you can avail
yourself of loopholes, insinuations, ambiguous and misleading
descriptors. And you write deals to give yourself unfair advantage. After
all, isn't that part of liberal arts training? I believe I read that
somewhere in a synopsis.

Anything you are willing to do to help stem this downward spiral in
rec.boats would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,

I've been trying to get such a deal from him for years. Hope he sticks to the spirit of his 'deal',
and not just the letter.

You're never going to get that "deal" because all of your anti-Harry
buddies won't let it go. Harry's dying to get them going again and
they ALWAYS make it easy for him to do just that. If you doubt what
I'm saying, go look at the posting history. Every year, SSDD.

1. It is true "they" can't let it go. I've been "away" from rec.boats
and not posting at all for a couple of weeks at a time now and then, and
the morons continue their juvenile games. These boys have nothing else
going in their lives so to suddenly stop their bad boy behavior here
would leave them with nothing to post.

2. What little interest I have in this newsgroup continues to decline.
Hell, I don't even read most of the posts of the assholes here, much
less comment on them. There are many other, more interesting venues
these days, and these are not packed with right-wing losers and iLoogys.

That's true. Harry hardly ever posts here anymore. Maybe thirty or forty a day, but that's a huge
drop. He's obviously lost most of his interest in this place.
