Wood or fiberglass?

Well, the one I was considering would be of 9mm plywood and framing
lumber. Quick and dirty... Or with taped corners which would take off
some weight. Either way, 1 1/2 sheets of plywood (just drew 'em out
quick), and a couple clean spruce or doug fir framing 2x4's, a few
bronze nails, and a pint of epoxy would do it if you were gonna' carpet
it. A couple hinges and a clasp.. Figure $75 for this version, 90 if you
tape instead of frame...

You could add a few bucks (depending on current prices, used to get
occoume for about 40 bucks a sheet in NYC), and go with Occoume and use
glass tape for the edges, then if you really wanted you could put a
coating of 4 oz tight weave fibergass over the ply (outside only so it
can breathe) and fill with resin. The tight weave is only about .030 in
thick and is not real heavy when filled, but adds a nice hard finish to
the Occoume or even Fir plywood which nicks and scratches pretty
easily... Add hardware and you're looking at around 100 bucks for this
version+ 20-30 if you glass the outside. But I think Tims carpet idea is
best.

I could do one just like the ones in Australia with mat and such, no
wood, but it would be heavy, about twice the materials cost, and I think
overkill for Tims project...

I used to get Occume at M. L. Condon's in White Plains because they
had a good selection and it was relatively close to where we used to
live. It was a lot more than $40/sheet however.
