Default Grit

I have a question...

I have a kayak with a rudder and grit has gotten into
the cable paths and not only makes it difficult to
operate the rudder, but I'm sure it's also acting like
sandpaper and abrading the walls of the cable path
and probably the cable itself.

Is there an accepted or recommended method of
flushing out this grit?

Any helpful hints?

Thanks for any ideas.
