I used to have a higher opinion of the military before I encountered
you, Herring, and flajim here.

If it weren't for the military, you and a lot of other people would be
speaking German right now. Try to remember that.

In that case, he'd long have perished in a concentration camp.

...and if it hadn't been for the Marines, Harry'd be speaking
Japanese.

Actually, by now, he'd long been beheaded.

I think he would have been in the first group to be beheaded.

You, herring and flajim have nothing in common with the brave soldiers
of WW II.

Hell, you never even left the country, and herring and flajim's
service did nothing more than prop up a corrupt right-wing
dictatorship in Vietnam.

I'd like to hear about the highlights of your service to the country.
Doesn't have to be military. Did you volunteer in any capacity?

When it is critical, seniority counts.

Seniority in a union just means you have managed to stick around for a
long time. It says nothing about the quality of your work or your
competency.

Seniority in the marines just means you re-enlisted.

Seniority in the military means you have been around and done quite a
lot of things. For officers if you make O-6 before 18 years in you are
on the fast track. If you haven't made it by 22 years you are just
marking time before you retire.

In the military seniority means you have been exposed to quite a bit of
stuff. My cousin is finally getting a battalion. He has been at NATO for
the last 18 months and he has been in Afghanistan for two tours and Iraq
for two tours. He is well on his way to O-6 and beyond.

Don't forget about enlisted time for us draftees!!

Luckily, a college degree wasn't required for OCS during the Vietnam days. High
school and a decent GT score seemed good enough, along with the requisite
recommendations and boards.

At the rate they were going through 2LT's and 1LT's, you had to get'em
from somewhere!

I have a plastic Metro card with about $18.00 on it. It'll get me from
Suitland Metro to downtown and back at least four times. Your
discharge from the marines wouldn't get me a cup of watered-down
coffee from MdDonalds.

Hey fella. Cherish that plastic metro card if that's all you have to
hang on to.

Both my grandfathers both received the Navy Cross in WWII. Amazing men
one died when I was three and there other died when I was in my early
20's. The one who died last was wounded at Iwo Jima before the landing
supporting the UDTs mapping the beaches. He was a very impressive guy.
He is party why I joined the USMC rather than then Navy. He started out
as a Field Music at Parris Island in 1926.

You keep playing that same old tired tune. If the country called I would
have gone. I didn't hid behind some story that I was carrying the
General"s suitcase.
