My old Dell laptop is getting unreliable, and it's not worth fixing.
Thinking about a new laptop, and want some views about the Mac laptop
lineup.
Are they more physically robust?
Thinking about shock resistance, and water/moisture resistance.
I'm guessing the Macs will handle all the common nav software, but maybe
not.
All help appreciated.
Boaters only, please. Because it's solely for boat use.

We got our grand daughter a Disney (Asus) hardened kid notebook that
looks pretty tough. It already spent a night out on the yard in the
rain and survived. The one we got has a solid state drive so there are
no moving parts. This machine is 1.6 gz.
I assume they make a more capable one in a similar case.

1. flajim, aka jim, aka many spoofed ID's here, does not have a boat and
has no need for a "boat use" computer.

2. if there are any legit posters reading these spoofed posts, mac
laptops are no more "physically robust" than other non-hardened laptops
with similar pricepoints and build quality.

3. mac laptops are no more water resistant than other non-hardened
laptops with similar pricepoints and build quality.

4. under their native OS, mac laptops do not run the garmin map software
that works with its upper end chart plotters. However, macs will run the
recent windows OS, including XP, Vista, and Windows 7, and the garmin
software runs perfectly well on a mac under Vista and Windows 7.

A real issue with laptops is the screen. Most laptop screens fade away
to invisibility out in direct sunshine.

The Disney notebook computer sounds interesting, but I would guess its
water resistance is based upon a "spill proof keyboard," and nothing
more. Still...that's better water resistance than...nothing.
