Talk about inflation. We had White Castle in Chicago before McD came around. 12 cents, and tasty. I tried a McD when they opened one on my paper route. 1959 or 1960. 79th and Phillips. Cardboard. Felt I was ripped off 3 cents. Didn't try your trick about throwing away the buns. Sinful in my family. Still prefer White Castle. Pretty much has to be an emergency to get me in McD. Tried the shake too. Phony. I could get a real ice cream malt for 30 cents. Even then the extra dime was worth it. After Charlie Manson, McD is probably the worse thing wrought by California. But that's off the cuff. I'm sure there's more. --Vic |

We stop there on the road for the bathrooms, and my wife can always eat their chicken. I confine myself to the biscuit/pork sausage/egg sandwiches early in the morning when we hit the road from a motel. Only place open usually, and she HAS to eat. But I always consider it an emergency when I stop there. Those biscuits go down good, but you pay later. --Vic |

But it was by University and San Pablo in Berkeley and was at least 3x the drive. Maybe 3 miles, instead of 1 mile. And we were young and immortal. |

Kids used to have me get a bunch to bring home to Calif when I went to Chicago on business. Any meat steamed on top of a grill full of onions and then have the bun soak up the meat juice and onion flavor has to be fantastic. |

There was a Vienna dog place on the south side that often had a line outside. Bought many dogs there. The reason they were better than other places was they steamed the buns. Wrapping good fries in the paper with the dogs didn't hurt either. --Vic |

Here in New Jersey, White Castle never went away, and it now seems like they are expanding. So, maybe you'll get lucky and they will return to your area.
