Virginia, bastion of peace, home to institutions of higher education.

I'm thinking enrollment in Virginia higher ed may not be rising?

WOODBRIDGE, Va. (AP) - A community college student was upset about his
grades when he walked into a classroom and fired two shots at his
professor before his new rifle jammed, police said Wednesday.

Jason M. Hamilton, 20, was unable to continue shooting at mathematics
professor Tatyana Kravchuk, who ducked behind a desk and was not hit,
Prince William County police Maj. Ray Colgan said. No one was injured.

"Probably what prevented a further tragedy was that the gun jammed,"
Colgan said.

Hamilton bought the Marlin .30-06 bolt-action rifle Monday at a Dick's
Sporting Goods store near the campus, police said.

Hamilton was arraigned Wednesday on charges of attempted murder and
discharging a firearm in a school zone. He was being held without
bond, and a preliminary hearing was scheduled for Jan. 11.

David R. Daugherty, Hamilton's attorney, declined to comment on the
charges and said his client's family is asking for privacy.

"He has two parents that love him, and obviously they're going through
a tremendous ordeal," said Daugherty, who was hired by the family.

Tuesday afternoon's shooting caused students and professors to
scramble for cover at Northern Virginia Community College's Woodbridge
campus, about 25 miles south of Washington. No one was injured in the
attack.

According to police, Hamilton walked into the classroom, pulled the
rifle out of a bag and pointed it at Kravchuk. He missed with the
first shot, at which point she dropped behind a desk and told students
to leave the room, Colgan said.

Hamilton fired again and missed again, then dropped the gun on the
floor after it jammed, Colgan said. He left the room, sat in a chair
and waited for police. When officers arrived, he surrendered
peacefully and confessed to the shooting, Colgan said.

Maybe it is society at large and the entitlement mentality at work. No
competition allowed these days in the school room. Feel good teaching, no
one failing and being held back. Why is this not happening in schools in
other countries, that require the student to study to pass? Who have
competitive exams to advance in school, or to get to the best schools.

Maybe we're seeing more images and reading more accounts of violence
being used to resolve differences.

The rhetorical arts aren't commonplace anymore and certainly aren't as
attractive as instant gratification.

Numerous Television shows and news sensationalism accounts, of
violence, from the far corners of the Country and the globe, deluge
people with awareness, that violence is an accessible option.
It's not alright for little Johnnie to play cowboys and Indians but it
is alright for broadcasters to bring gore and violence, on an hourly,
schedule, into the home. Then there are killing oriented games for
computers and consoles for kids. TV is what is raising most kids, these
days.

"If it bleeds, it leads" in the television news game. That crap is
not welcome in our house. None of the cop shows, none of the violent
crap that Hollywood spews, none of the killing games.

It's amazing how much of that **** the average American household
consumes. No wonder most of America thinks the way they do.

He would have had better luck with the Marlin lever action 30-30. Lot
better rifle, IMHO.

Maybe not JP. However, you tend to take out your frustrations here on
rec.boats with those of whom you disagree, or of whom you believe is
below your order. But, no one is braver, nor the wiser than you,
correct?

I'm thinkin' the NRA would back him up. There's no good reason a new
gun should jam when you're tryin' to kill someone.

How much is the loss of loss of life worth?
