There's a discussion board for older Chris Craft boats:

http://www.chris-craft.org/index.php

Betcha you can find lots of info there, good, bad and ugly.

If the hull, tanks, and electrics are sound, putting in a new marine
engine/tranny might be worth it.

You have to remember, Harry is narcissistic, and NEEDS to stand up and

The one thing about these boats is their interior room - the cabin is
very spacious and very well appointed for it's time. With respect to
having it surveyed, hey, couple hundred dollars? Take the chance.

I know a local who has one - never been in salt water, always fresh
water - he summers it on Lake George. Had it since it was new and
I've never heard him complain. Had the engines changed a couple of
years ago with 5.0L Mercs. He's kept it up well, had it painted a few
years back, etc. Says he'll keep it until it rots out from under him
- he's never had bad spots in the hull either which is, well, unusual.

I like them if that counts for anything.

Is the boat a salt or sweet water boat? That could make a difference.

thanks for the update...appreciate it.

it's 'brackish' water...NY harbor. owner says he takes it out of water
each winter. i know chris craft has a great reputation. the interior
does look roomy...

It's definetly worth a look see then - in particular if the price is
right.

If you are really into boats of a "certain age" you might want to look
into Uniflite Salty Dogs. Believe it or not, they have aged very
nicely and owners really take care of them. They look a lot like the
28' Topaz sport fisherman.

Salty Dog owners are sort of a "cult" if you will - they really look
after their boats. There are two of them down at the marina I'm
associated with and damn me if they don't look brand new.

There are a couple of other Uniflite models that are well thought of
in that size range, but at the moment I can't think of their names.

I dont' know anything much about the Catalnina, but I used to ahve a
'64 wood hull 27' Cavalier. It was spacious. it had a 110vAC "ice
box" and a gas 2 burner stove a table and booth which would also fold
down for a bed. It wasn't equipped with a head, but it did have a
closet which also could be used for a porta-potty or a shower. and
yes, pretty generous room actually. the boat was a single 283
corvette engine 4bbl carb. inboard, that pushed the boat along quite
well that is when you got it up to speed. otherwise it was a plowing
fool even with trim tabs, at low speed it seemed like that's all it
wanted to do was plow water. but up on plane, it seemed quite agile
for it's size. Only real complaint was backing it up, like out of a
slip, If I remember correctly you couldn't back straight regardless of
rudder position, it always wanted to back to the left. and that was
the nature of the beast.

I had a blast with that boat! I only wish it had been trailerable
with practicality.
