A filter is useful for (at least) the following reasons:

1) You can filter out folks that NEVER post on topic,

2) You can filter out threads and sub-threads that you KNOW aren't
going anywhere you want to: Bill Sucks, Politics Something, Insult
Whatever

3) Those prefaced with OT- are not of interest.....

You mean, no beer, no guitars, no race reports?? Come on, the
occassional kitchen remodel and lawnmower report has to be of some
interest? ;)

Rowdy Mouse Racing, Carver was carnage this weekend...

And what about those septic tank pumping episodes, as well as tracking a
FedEx package?

Don't forget the $700 office chair/bed.

You must have a slow server. Applying the filters makes no noticeable
difference in the updating of headers with my server and news reader.

Maybe it's the way I tried to set it up. Or maybe because it was
working hard - most of the posts were flonkers.

Why let a filter censor what I can read?

Because you set it to do so. You can always undo a filter if you
simply *must* read the author's tripe.

The way I look at is filters is somebody making me jump through hoops.
Easier to delete them than to be constantly setting a filter.

I found getting rid of 400 headers with one 'Apply Filters' click to
be very worthwhile. I didn't have to decide whether or not to read
each one. I don't like the idea of wearing out my 'free will'.

Not much brain power used for me to delete them.
I think the real difference is you're a real nice guy and I'm a prick.
I actually enjoy deleting posts unopened.
Maybe besides being a prick, I'm a newgroup pervert.
Gives me a sense of power and manliness to delete posts unopened.
Filters won't allow that perverse, if minor, pleasure.
Just have me jumping through hoops, tinkering with filters.
Maybe another thing is I don't enjoy applying logic and programming
skills since I retired. Not required for my SS paycheck.
Johnny Paycheck. Take this job....................
Now I'm a real go with the flow guy.
Islands in the Stream. Dolly and Kenny.
That'll work.
Like I said though, whatever works.
You know, do your own thing. Or is it THANG?

If you are an Islands in the Stream guy, you must not be sober a whole
lot! :)

I mostly filter out or skip posts from the non-boaters, and filter out
posts from the droolers. I just don't have the patience anymore to fight
my way through posts from many of the near-functionally illiterate or
impossibly stupid.

Well, I would not have relished deleting 400 posts made by HK, and
those posts by jps. That's just too damn many keystrokes!

I found getting rid of 400 headers with one 'Apply Filters' click to
be very worthwhile. I didn't have to decide whether or not to read

Well, say what you will. I'm trying hard to be a prick.

Maybe besides being a prick, I'm a newgroup pervert.

Now you're getting into the sex stuff. For shame.

Gives me a sense of power and manliness to delete posts unopened.

Clicking the 'Apply Filters' button would be like a quadruple dose of
Viagra. Talk about power...you can watch the number of headers drop by
400 in one fell swoop!

Filters won't allow that perverse, if minor, pleasure.
