The ancient Greeks discovered that the Earth is spherical which led to
the development of the heavenly sphere - or an imaginary spherical
surface rotating with attached heavenly bodies. This led to the more
modern view of the sphere being fixed in place with the stars rotating
within the sphere. This concept of the sphere is still in use.

Mighty handy when rounding the Horn or sailing from San Francisco to
Hawaii or crossing the Atlantic in a small outboard powered boat.
