It's the Squids you gotta watch out for. :)

Squids are just naturally friendly people. Warm rack, good food, get to
travel about the world's oceans in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club.

Unlike mud grunts.

Almost as civilized as those who ride airplanes for a living. Not like fox
hole diggers.

Hey - ain't nothing like rolling around in water buffalo sh*t on a hot
humid day - racking out under the leaf canopy listening to the sounds
of the jungle at night or shaking out your boots for the occasional
rat or snake.

You clowns in your nice clean racks with the air conditioning and
three squares a day - yeah, I'm looking at you too Squids - don't know
what you missed out on.

Pansies... :)

My goodness, that sounds almost like....Vietnam!

I still kid my brother about his sleeping in a tent at China Beach (SeaBee)
building the hospital, while I sat in an air conditioned electronics shop at
stateside bases.

I was lucky. I had a 'hootch' at Cu Chi Base Camp. Didn't spend one night
in a tent. Hell, I even had a refrigerator in my hootch, won in a poker
game by the guy who was there before me. It was coincidental, I took his
company in Germany, when he went to Vietnam, and when I got to Vietnam I
took over his company there.

I know some of the stuff we missed out on. Junkle Rot, bugs in the shoes
(not really, I was based at Biloxi, and Cock Roaches were endemic), no golf
courses for the ossifers. . .

I forgot to mention the leeches, mosquitos, rice bugs, gnats,
no-seeums and other sundry critters that made life to enjoyable for
REAL men.

Pansies. :)

Oh, I know what I missed. I don't miss it.

Oh come on - you know you would have loved it.

You just don't want to admit it. :)

Don't forget sitting out under big leafy plants while it's 90 degrees
and raining 8"s an hour.

(or is that a minute?)

Actually turned down trips to Vietnam twice. First time the Army offered me
W.O. to fly choppers. 1965. Went to all us top students at Keesler and
especially ones that had passed flight physicals. 2nd time as a civilian
contractor for NCR on the 500 series systems at the firebases. They were
not offering enough dinero. Co worker went (former Squid on heavy cruiser)
and NCR finally upped the ante and the per diem. The per diem was not
enough for rent in Saigon. I figured I would not finish college if I went
until I was really old.

I tried for helicopter school. Couldn't get in because of an irregular
heart beat - premature ventricular contractions. They could never pinpoint
the problem, but it kept me out of flight school. Really ****ed me off.
I've not had pvc's for a good thirty years now.

But, the Army did send me to college after Vietnam - paid for everything,
including books, and gave me another $100 for typing support and
miscellaneous costs. Pretty good deal. They called it the "Undergraduate
Degree Completion Program".
