U.S. Economy: Payrolls Post Biggest Annual Decline Since 1945

By Shobhana Chandra

Jan. 9 (Bloomberg) -- The U.S. lost more jobs in 2008 than in any year
since 1945 as employers fired another 524,000 people in December,
indicating a free-fall in the economy just days before President-elect
Barack Obama takes office.

“Consumers are now going to get more and more scared at the prospect of
losing their job,” said Nariman Behravesh, chief economist at IHS Global
Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts. Obama’s proposed fiscal stimulus
“needs to be big, needs to be bold, needs to be swift. If they can do
something quickly we can limit the hemorrhage by mid-year.”

The Labor Department reported that the nation lost 2.589 million jobs in
2008, just shy of the 2.75 million decline at the end of World War II.
The unemployment rate climbed more than economists forecast, to 7.2
percent in December, the highest level in almost 16 years.

Today’s figures will intensify pressure on U.S. lawmakers to act quickly
on Obama’s recovery program, which may exceed $775 billion and aims to
save or create 3 million jobs. They also underscore the urgency of the
Federal Reserve’s $200 billion initiative to restart consumer financing
markets that’s scheduled to begin next month.

Thank you for your leadership on these economic issues, President Bush.

Couldn't possibly be lack of confidence in our president elect, could
it? Where is all this recovery and stimulus money, that Mr Obama intends
to spend, coming from?

Now if we could get the Feds from stop over spending and there would be
money for the economy to grow on, we could get out of this mess.

I don't think that is the way out. We need massive infusion of capital
to get the economy moving, and corporate America ain't spending it.

The problem is that nobody knows for sure how to fix this. They are using a
shot gun approach, hoping they hit something.

I am totally convinced that the current panic reaction is going to do
nothing but further cause more problems. It's time for people to stop
being so idealistic and become realistic.

BTW, I just found out about 30 min. ago that the company I started just won
a major contract for technology that I can't identify just yet. They are
hiring. And their achievement has absolutely nothing to do with proposed
economic salvation plans proposed by the incoming administration.

Harry doesn't understand the concept that the taxes have to be paid
for by someone. That someone is the end consumer. Let's take building
design. Let's say it's a Twinky factory. I have to pay taxes so I
charge the contractor more for my services. The contractor charges
Twinky Corp. more for the design/build of the facility. Harry thinks
that Twinky Corp will eat the extra cost, and they won't, they'll pass
it on to Mr. Consumer, no matter if he's rich, or dirt poor and just
wants a Twinky. Seems trivial, but not in the large scheme of things.
It'll happen over and over again to Twinky Corp. with the equipment
manufacturers, the raw material suppliers, everybody. And it ALL gets
to be paid for by the little old lady on SSI that lives on the corner
et al.

That makes good sense unless your goal is for the government to run the
corporations.

I visited China (PRC) back in 1986 when they were first experimenting
with the concepts of foreign investments and a subtle shift towards
capitalism.

It was an amazing exposure to life under an extreme socialist society.
(Communism)

The average Chinese factory worker had to bow to and worship his employer
who in turn worshiped his provincial mayor for the opportunity to make a
living for his family.

It was sad. And it hasn't changed.

And, it where this country is heading.

Every American and Canadian should support the union/labour movement.
If not for themselves, for their children & grandchildren.

What a line of crap. I never was anti-union, nor pro-union until the
dysfunctional and corrupt GM & Chrysler bailout was happening. This crosses
the line into bilking tax payers, US and Canadian for a ****ed up pair of
companies. Brown boys for Carlyle and Cerberus.

Most of the people laid off are not auto at all. Infact better than 95% are
non-auto. Who is bailing them out? Would they be bailed out if private
equity with Bush connections didn't exist? Senate and congress didn't
aprrprove, yet no noise of funds misapproriation? Smacks of corruption and
union rant.

Unions are small fry making big noise, some politician aught to tell CAW/UAW
to shove it up their asses.

Adding to middle class tax load with bailouts makes the problem worse.
Government does not yet get it, it isn't the solution, it is the problem.
They need to leave middle class with more of their tax dollars.

You can't keep adding to the tax load when the problem is the middle class
was short of cash. In time, it will come back on taxes and make the problem
worse. If you want main stream north Americans to buy GM & Chrysler, they
first need the money to pay their mortgages or they will not be buying cars.

You want the economy fixed? So do I. But it isn't going to get better
until you pick the corrupt leaches of the ass of the tax payer. Government
got greedy with cheap easy fiat money managment to fund over sized
government and corrupt practices, reverse that and we can all enjoy.

If I sound aggitated, I am, this explains:

I don't think that is the way out. We need massive infusion of capital
to get the economy moving, and corporate America ain't spending it.

Why should they? All they will do is become penalized via taxes.

Well, then, let them liquidate themselves so others who want to run a
business can fill the voids.

BTW, I just found out about 30 min. ago that the company I started just won
a major contract for technology that I can't identify just yet. They are
hiring. And their achievement has absolutely nothing to do with proposed
economic salvation plans proposed by the incoming administration.

Congratulations and best wishes for continued success.

You have to be kidding. Businesses survive, employ people, provide health
plans, and grow because they can make a profit. Take that incentive away
and you get what we have now.

And it ALL gets
to be paid for by the little old lady on SSI that lives on the corner
et al.

As long as the money keeps moving around everyone is happy and the
government has lots of money (taxes) to spend on ridiculous things
(Pork)and some necessary things. When money moves in exchange for
nothing (Handouts, Gifts, Bailouts) etc. some people are happy for a
while until everything comes to a screeching halt. The socialist,
liberal, entitlement crap that Harry is promoting is what got us to
where we are now. You want my money, give me something of value for it.
You love your country, don't run and hide when it needs you to serve in
it's military and then expect it to protect and feed you. Guys like
Harry make me sick to my stomach.

No it isn't.

It isn't want you want or it isn't what I said?

If the latter, you are dead wrong. It is exactly what the ultimate
structure and relationship of a controlled, "unionized" society is.

Eisboch

Perhaps in your mind, not in mine.

I don't have any serious arguments with you or your positions...yours
are intellectually and experientally based, and while we are on opposite
sides of some issues, that causes me no stress.
