Hey, gimmee a break, Scott. With exception of gawking around the
internet, writing some stuff on MS Word, and blabbing here on
Wreck.Bildge... what more have I needed?

my lands, until yesterday, I didn't know how to send a pic though an
email until a friend told me how to put it in file form, and I may
have forgotten that by now.

I admit, I could be electic, but I'm not much of a progressive
thinker.

Don't feel pregnant. For an electrical engineer who made his living in a
technical world I know almost nothing about computers. I was all proud of
myself yesterday though. My son's beachhouse (where I really enjoy hanging
out once in a while) has Comcast cable and a cable modem, but it was all
hardwired. I bought a wireless router a few weeks ago, took it down to the
house and there it sat, box unopened. Seems like everytime I try doing
something with a computer I screw it up.

My other son (Eisboch Jr.) is a whiz at installing this kind of stuff, so I
figured I'd wait until he came down to help. Well, he hadn't shown up yet,
so I got my courage up, opened the box, read the directions and attempted it
myself.

HOLY CRAP! it works! Even installed the secured network duber. Made my
day.

Now you just need to make sure you set up all of the security
settngs.. First thing is to make sure it is not broadcasting a network
id... Shut down unused ports is second on the list. Of course so folks
don't really care especially if they are not doing anything critical
on the network. My nieghbor has a open connection I use when we shut
down our network for electrical strorms and such. I use it mainly to
watch the radar, they know of course, but don't really care..

What do mean "broadcasting a network ID"?
I set it up as a secured network. If you search for available wireless
networks, it shows up with
the name I gave it (Beachhouse) and "Security-enabled wireless network". In
order to log on, a predetermined "key" has to be entered.

So, is that secure? I would think that unless somebody figured out the key,
they shouldn't be able to log on.

I also have file sharing, etc. disabled on our computers.

That's about all I know about this. Actually, I really don't care anyway,
other than somebody getting a free ride to the Internet. There's nothing on
my computer worth anything to anybody.

DO NOT turn off the SSID!

If you have a WPA or WPA2 encrypted network with a long mixed case,
mixed alpanumeric, non dictionary password, you have security good
enough to keep out all except unnamed goverment agencies. WEP sucks and
can be cracked fairly quickly.

If you turn off the SSID on the router, then your computer is forced to
broadcast that SSID to negotiate a connection. If you are at another
location, that broadcast from your computer can be used to spoof the
SSID on an evil access point that your machine will then connect to!

If there is any zero day exploit out for either your OS, browser or
security software then you've just got your PC pwned by some l33t haxor.
*NOT* good :-(

Its worth developing the habit of switching the wireless OFF while its
not in use.

That's what it did. It generated a 21 character string of mixed
alpha/numerical characters as the key.
I guess that means it's as good as at can be.

I shut the wireless off whenever I am not on the 'Net.
