If you are looking for a high quality point and shoot, then the
Olympus FE series is one you should seriously take a look at.
Personally, if I were you, I'd look at the FE-310. In particular as
you can get them for under $100.

You really don't need a DSLR for what you are looking to do.
If you decide to go DSLR, the Nikon D-40 is ok although I'm a little
underwhelmed by it. It's a good camera, but it's definetly not a
higher end Nikon and the optics are as good as the higher priced
cameras.
Besides, EVERYBODY has a Nikon - be different. :)
My preference for a smaller, DSLR type performance in a semi-point and
shoot, the Olympus SP series is a good one. I really like this camera
as a point and shoot.

Just depends on what you want to spend and what you want to do.
Tells you how I handle digital, is over a year ago, I bought a
Fugifilm s-700 and i've taken about 400+ pics with it,and haven't
downloaded a one of them yet.

Start with your hard drive. Download ifranview for simple resizing and
editing and take it from there.

Make sure she buys you something that you will enjoy using. Not
something that you will have to learn to enjoy using. There is nothing
worse than having your wife buy you a new hobby that you have no
interest in. I like taking pictures, I don't like taking photographs. I

Make sure she buys you something that you will enjoy using. Not something
that you will have to learn to enjoy using. There is nothing worse than
having your wife buy you a new hobby that you have no interest in. I like

I used to play around a bit. After I bought the Minolta SRT200 35mm SLR, I
enrolled in a Community College Photography Course where we larned the
basics, did a lot of b&w darkroom work and even some CibaChrome from colour
prints.
I guess I'm a middle roader, I want to do a little more than snapshots, but
not committed (or talented?) enough to attempt serious photography.
That's my dilemna in choosing a new camera..... convience (carry everywhere)
or flexibility.
Maybe a compact for Christmas and watch the winter sales for a lower end
DSLR.
