Senator Carl Marcellino - stance on local sailing issues ?
Strictly speaking on the environment and sailing issues, does anyone
know if he is for or against allowing the local marina to expand? I know he was part of getting the water front in oyster bay upgraded, but that project does not seem to have helped the local marina and marine education programs as much as I had hoped. The marina won't talk about it, being careful about their not for profit status. Thought I would ask hear to see if anyone knows any facts. Thanks Dan |

Yes, Oyster Bay Long Island
The town upgraded the entire water front along west end avenue. It is very impressive to walk through their now. In the original site plan local marina would have moved into a larger building at the edge of the water next to the docks, with class rooms for marine programs, etc. Instead, they had to move all their boats and maintenance sheds to a far corner of the property far from the docks, the fundraising program for the new building is in limbo because the siting of their building is no longer certain, and they have suffered other cutbacks on what they can do at the waterfront before the improvements were made. luc wrote: b393capt wrote: Strictly speaking on the environment and sailing issues, does anyone know if he is for or against allowing the local marina to expand? there is another issue boiling a few miles farther east, in Peconic Bay. I've been hanging out there since I was a kid, and people always anchored in front of the Yacht Club, if you can call it that. It's a quaint little building, with no hot water, and only a toilet and one sink. No bar, no kitchen, etc., etc. Actually very nice in many respects. Anyway, it was rumored that they wanted to get rid of the anchored sailboats in front of the club. This action was proposed by someone in local government. Their reasoning was environmental. Someone looked at ariel photographs of the site, and noticed that the chains were leaving circles where sealife that lives on the bay floor was being scraped away by the chains. Considering the size of the bay, and the relatively minor size of the scraped areas, I can't believe it is doing much damage, but looking for a reason to deny sailors the right to anchor is what some people want to do. just thought I'd pass that on, to let folks know what maybe coming. Let's hope not. and furthermore, if it comes up in your area, fight it! |

Environmental reasons ... that is outrageous. These are the sample
people who would think nothing of clearing their land of healthy trees and bushes to grow grass, place chemicals on their lawns to kill bugs, use other chemicals that could harm wildlife, and otherwise alter the environment around their own homes ... and they complain about the mud being disturbed by a chain ??? I bet many of these people will also dump the batteries from their games, camera',s etc, in the garbage, rather than recycling them and preventing the toxins from entering the environment.
