your peers. It was a badge of accomplishment. It put you in a
fraternity of technicians with proven skills. GROL is a joke. Just
like the Volunteer Examiner ham licenses, it wouldn't surprise me if you
could buy one for $500 under the table.

By the way, the GMDSS operator and servicer tests are a pain in the

So where is this GROL license, Larry? couldn't you find the $500? The
FCC doesn't list you as having anything other than a ham license.

"I passed.... "

Passed gas maybe ... The FCC license database doesn't list your name.

A drawer the FCC can't even find.

What's going on, Larry? How come the FCC doesn't have you in the license
database? If those licenses are SO easy to get where are yours?

I went to the database to search for my GROL and it says it is not there,
yet, it is sitting in front of me on the desk. It was issued as a
replacement for my 1st phone 3/31/87. I have had a name change since then,
but I think it would still be there under the old name.

Go to:
http://wireless2.fcc.gov/UlsApp/UlsS...chAdvanced.jsp

Enter your name, LAST, FIRST M.I. and see what happens. Try your old
name if you haven't updated or renewed. Maybe it just expired altogether.

Reset the search and enter the license number as the call sign. Don't
enter the dashes, just the letters and figures (like pggb017659). It
works on mine and others I have researched. The database is fussy about
how the information is entered and you must "reset" for each new search.
The use of the license number as "call sign" will return that license
and the name to which it is issued. Use the name as it is listed to find
other licenses held.

Enter BUTLER, LARRY E and see what you find.

Thanks Rick. Doing it that way, I did come up in the database. I see it is
time to get that changed over. I got certified by NARTE in my fields soon
after the 1st Phone went away. I was teaching at the time and wanted
something to show my qualifications, in my area, of so called, expertise.

It is a touchy but pretty well featured database.

Go to the home page for the ULS and you can update all your info online.
It is really easy to do once you have registered in their system.

The FCC is amazingly quick and efficient for a government agency. I
applied for a new ship station one afternoon last week and within hours
they had assigned a callsign and the next morning the whole thing was in
the database and completed. Still waiting for the post office to do
their part now.

I had this same shock about 3 years ago. My Amateur Extra showed up but not
the GROL with ship radar in the database. I found out they don't
automatically enter them after the First Phone to GROL downgrade. So I
entered it myself and really screwed it up. I had to email and then call a
nice lady at Gettysburg to get rid of two FRNs. It was painless, but a bit
embarrassing. I didn't admit to have a degree with a minor in computer
science (OK they did glow in the dark and we used Hollerith cards or punched
paper tape LOL)
