I have a 13.5 Boston Whaler with 40hp Yamaha that I used mostly in the
sal****er streams and marshes on the coast of South
Carolina. I know absolutely nothing about them. This is my first
inquiry. What
model, mount etc would you recommend. Fred in South
Carolina------I am a senior citizen and with age goes
eye sight so I want one that is easy to read. I really want one that
is good in shallow water since we have a lot of oyster beds. My
present depth finder is very accurate--my boat paddle. Thanks for any

Hi Fred,

you don't mention how shallow. Most depth finders LCG type(Liquid
Crystal Graph) will work in water two or 3 feet deep but, not in
Automatic mode. Vexilar makes a real nice flasher unit that shows fish
.. I have both a Lowrance LCG and a flasher. the flasher is color so
you do not have read numbers. I would look for one that is waterproof too.

If you are shallow enough for a boat paddle to determine your depth,
then a sonar won't be of much use to you - you might get depth, but
probably not much in the way of fish identification. I'd even be
suspicious of the depth reasings.

How much water (in terms of depth) are you fishing in?
