There is a market for the coal and stone where there are no steel mills although the steel mills do use both. The 1,000 ft one are strictly ore boats, which were only a wet dream until the Eisenhower locks were built at the "Sue" in the late 50s. The Canadians haul most of the stone and coal using old (small) boats purchased from US fleets. Can't think of anyplace along Ontario or St Lawrence that has a use for either stone or coal. Alcoa at Massinas/p might use some coal. Lew |
