: People used to wonder why the 360/65 used to slow down at busy times even though it had cost all of those millions. Over my computer desk is a non-descript picture taken by a high school teacher through that window in the door to a small closet like a janitor would use. http://tinyurl.com/3x44t6 Inside are two boys, one seated at a teletype console with a reperf paper tape punch/reader next to it, and the other standing over the first looking at the yellow roll paper coming out of the teleprinter. The school rented computer time on a university 360 somewhere offcampus. The caption at the bottom says, "We told it what to do and it just did it.", a quote from the scrawny kid standing up. I put another caption on the frame......"Time Bomb" The boy standing is Bill Gates, the richest man on the planet. The multibillionaire seated typing on the keys is Paul Allen, his school buddy, not far down the list of the world's richest men. It truly is like watching a time bomb about to go off......Micro$oft The company picture from 1978 is in the frame next to it. A bunch of nerdy kids smiling like Cheshire cats....listening to the ticking! http://sprott.physics.wisc.edu/picko...osoft_1978.jpg DAMN - I coulda bought STOCK for next to nuthin'....just like everyone else DIDN'T. Stupid, stupid, STUPID! Just think how stupid the teacher that took the picture feels! I don't feel too bad....IBM let them nearly put IBM out of business! Larry -- |

I met Paul Allen a couple of times - working on the restoration of his 1912 JN-4 Jenny - 3 or 4 years ago. You know, as rich guys go he's a real nice fellow. Never had a gripe about anything. Loved the work. Grinned like a kid when we showed him what was done. Signed big checks without batting an eyebrow. The kind of restoration customer everybody dreams of... Richard |

Y'all can try to get them to honor the sale......but as I went to BestBuy to get my $24+ coupon discount, I looked to see how many drives were left. THE PRICE HAS BEEN INCREASED BACK TO $279.95 FOR THIS HARD DRIVE. Sorry if you missed it.....(c; Mine still has almost 300GB unused! Grabit's working on that....(c; You can still get good deals online though, and I'm not talking about ebay. I bought a 500GB USB hard drive from eCost. With the rebate, it was $89.99+S&H, which was like $11 or something. It's a Hitachi in a USB enclosure with the same little sideways plugging switcher power supply on yours. It arrived the 2nd day after I bought it. That's only $0.20/MB. Here's the one I got: http://www.ecost.com/detail.aspx?edp=3347820 It's more now than when I bought it last month. Prices and rebates are always changing. They also have one that's USB or eSATA for $5 more. Steve |
