Default wifi question for the experts

There was some discussion recently about a wifi card for laptop.
I seem to get only minimal signal using my laptop (built in) card.

I would like to install a removable card, with rangebooster, and an
external antenna (that I can put outside temporarily).

I called staples on the island, and they have no clue what I am
talking about.

Any suggestions here?
thanks!!

but I'm not responsible for making it work for you.

It has power-over-Ethernet so only an Ethernet cable goes up the mast to
the masthead-mounted unit. Turn off the laptop's internal wifi
transceiver and plug this into the laptop's Ethernet port like you would
a cable modem at home. Your laptop is now connected to a really high-
powered wifi bridge as high up as you can get it.

Screwing around with another 20-50mw plugin card and some rinky dink
antenna on the main hatch isn't going to fix your weak signal problems.

Skip has one and was trying to get it to work as a wifi repeater so he
wouldn't have to plug it in. I think his problem was that the local wifi
link from the repeater to his computer was interfering and crashing with
the transmissions of the remote router where the marina wifi came from.
Hooking it up directly with Ethernet and turning off all other wifi
transmitters, such as the one inside your notebook, eliminates this local
interference.

These units run the full RF power allowed by the FCC. I'm amazed they
are so cheap in an outdoor cabinet....Follow the instructions that come
with them.

I'm using a Rootenna with a Engenius access point inside. I got it from
WISP in Kansas for about $200. Works great. Setup was trying, but I run
Ubuntu Fiesty for my operating system.

Good product but poorly documented and somewhat difficult to work with
(I own one and finally got it working, but not without pain).

Here is my favorite, also by Senao but much less expensive and easy to
use:

http://wlanparts.com/product/SUB-362EXT

It also needs a good antenna and some LMR400 coax:

http://wlanparts.com/product/OD24-12

and

http://wlanparts.com/product/RPSMANM24

Call and ask for Frank regarding custom lengths of LMR400 coax with
connectors pre-installed.

The Senao SUB-362EXT performs just as well as the 3220 in my
experience and is much easier to set up and use. It also gets its
power from the USB port which is convenient. I am routinely able to
hit sites more than 2 miles away over water, sometimes 4 or 5 miles to
a good outdoor access point.

I've bought a lot of WiFi hardware from wlanparts.com and have been
very satisfied with their prices and service.

It works great for a land yacht. Just drive your car or van into a
neighborhood and hit the "scan" button on the software and you'll find a
bunch of unsecured wi-fi access points from people who don't secure
their home networks.

The antenna was originally called the RV wi-fi antenna and they changed
a few things and made it more waterproof and call in the RV/Wave
antenna. If you've got USB ports on your computer you're in business.
I'm sitting on my sailboat anchored about a half mile from an access
point and that's how this post got here.

I'm aboard my Allied Seawind 32, thank you. My Swan is over in the Med
