I just recently subscribed to a few sailboat/cruiser oriented news groups.
Within hours of joining and posting on this site I began receiving those bogus emails from "Microsoft Support" asking me to run the attached "patch". I'm not going to fall for THAT one, but it is annoying. The email I'm using here is a "forwarding" email which I can delete at any time and I'm filtering the email which doesn't conform to a legitimate reply to a group post. Naturally I also have a virus scanner at work to delete them as they come in. So the viruses are "harmless" but as I said, very annoying. I'm curious as to a few things. 1) Why are attachements even allowed in a news group? 2) What do others do about a "reply" address in the group. Use a real address and just put up with it and filter it out? Or is there some special trick that experienced news groupies know? Jeff |

I use a bogus "return address:" @nospam.com.
Spammers harvest email addresses from website discussion groups and newsgroups. And as you've discovered, they get 'em very quickly. If you want your real email address known, put it in the body of your post, never in the header. your post, never in the header. Not a good idea either, some bots scan the body for addresses, too. If *absolutely necessary* to post a valid email address, put some gobbldeygook text into it, and state which part of the address needs to be deleted to make it valid. |
