Can anyone recommend a good stop in Charleston SC for a few days? We stayed
at City Marina last year and it was ok. Is there a better one? We like to
walk the town and visit all the pubs!

Ashley Marina right next door on the other side of the 55 ft clearance
James Island Bridge. Ashley even has WiFi internet service for free,
now. Ashley runs a van service to take you around town or to West
Marine at no extra charge. A little tip to the crew driving the van
is nice, however.

Ashley keeps lots of crew on hand to keep the place clean and are very
good at helping any size yacht dock. Transients stay on the face dock
outside and inside making departures easy and convenient. The Yanmar
shop is on the first floor with diesel mechanics that work on all
makes if you need them....

Second floor has nice heads nice showers, a whole laundromat, a
captain's lounge with huge projection TV and HOUSE FURNITURE to relax
in with telephone and internet connections if you like. There's even
an elevator to help you get up and down. Top floor is the yacht
brokerage. Out on the face dock is another lounge on the corner of
the dock closest to the bridge where you can also relax. One of the
802.11b WiFi transmitters is there, too.

If your mast is too tall for Ashley as ours is, you might try the
Charleston Maritime Center which is right by the aquarium and where the Ft.
Sumter Ferry leaves from and on the CARTA line. Although I can walk to the
Visitor's Center from there. They have a BoatUS discount or did when we
were there but no internet.

We've also stayed at the marina in Mt. Pleasant (Charleston Harbor?), which
is within walking distance of the Patriot Point exhibits, and you can take
a water taxi over to the downtown, or the hotel has a bus that's free that
goes back and forth. We had a phone line at the boat there, so I could log
on to the internet from my own cabin.

We also sometimes stay at Isle of Palms - you can walk to the CARTA line
from there too, although it is a little farther. And once we went to
Buzzard's Point, but that is isolated, and although they have a good
restaurant on site it is dangerous to walk anywhere from there.

If you stay at the Maritime Center, be SURE to put out your snubbers
to keep the boat from crashing against the dock in the WAVES.....It's
not in a no-wake zone and commercial shipping and tugboats are always
creating wakes, not to mention the wind......(c;

Thanks for the info. I like the idea of WiFi on the dock too. My work is
mostly over the internet and its nice to be able to send and receive large
drawings without the use of my cell phone. We have a 41' Defever so bridge
height is not a problem. Sounds like a plan, we will probably be there
sometime in early November.
