I am only familiar with the Broads through Arthur Ransome's remarkable
"Swallows and Amazons" series. "Coot Club" and "The Big Six" are set in these waters; it must have been remarkable in the 1930's, and it sounds as though the area is essentially unchanged! The Broads are stuffed with boats of all kinds, from Norfolk Wherries to skiffs. It spreads from The Wash to the north and spreads all along the Norfolk and Suffolk coastlines, going inland for many miles. It's a huge wildlife preserve too, and has a very old commercial history. All the thatch you see on 'olde worlde' houses comes from Norfolk Broads... HTH Molesworth |
