Old Boats and Insurance
I am looking for insurance for my old big boat. (83 foot, 1940's, twin 220
hp diesel..etc.) The boat is located mid East coast USA. Question- If I am interested in liability only coverage with 3 to $500,000 coverage...which companies should I speak to and what should I expect to spend? Many marinas are requiring proof of at least liability so I am guessing that others with older boats face the same challenges as I do. I am hopeful that the more experienced have found good coverage at reasonable prices. Currently I am being quoted around $2,500 for liability only and hear tales of others paying very little for the same type of liability only coverage. Hull coverage quotes run an additional $4500 for around a $100,000 of hull coverage with $10,000 deductible. (This was nearly impossible to locate due to age and length.) Due to the cost I am considering dropping and self-insuring the hull. Thanks for your help and I hope these questions are not inappropriate for this group. |

Hmmm. An 83 foot boat that loses power in a Florida marina could incur
$500k in property damage in a microsecond. Is an umbrella liability policy available with your homeowner's policy? MarshallE wrote: I am looking for insurance for my old big boat. No, I am told that my umbrella has limits based upon length and horsepower.
Yes, most any of the larger boats could cause damage. Smaller boats that have power and lose steering could cause significant damage as well....but I understand what you are saying. That type of damage does happen but is infrequent....therefore I am guessing the risk is low. Thanks for the ideas. What do others do or think? "chuck" wrote in message ink.net... Hmmm. Marshall, you need more than just the normal liability coverage that
covers damage to other boats, people and the marina...these days, you also have to have enviromental pollution damage insurance, in case you have a major oil or fuel spill or the boat sinks full of fuel. Give Al Golden at IMIS (International Marine Insurance Services) a call...they're independent brokers in the Annapolis area who do nothing BUT yacht insurance. I've known Al for more than 10 years...he's good people and knows his business: 800-541-4647 -- Peggie ---------- Peggie Hall Specializing in marine sanitation since 1987 Author "Get Rid of Boat Odors - A Guide To Marine Sanitation Systems and Other Sources of Aggravation and Odor" http://shop.sailboatowners.com/books...ku=90&cat=1304 |

Good Luck, I can imagine the trouble you must be having. I had a 32'
1964 Pearson Vanguard and had a devil of a time getting insurance for that. Most Boat /Yacht insurance companies don't even want to talk to you if your vessel is over 20 years old. They ALL wanted an out of water survey done on the boat even though I had a survey that was less than a year old the last time I had the boat hauled. I finally opted for liability only, |
