I found my Spade likes to set for a while before I do anything else with
it. It works better in grass than the Bruce, in my opinion. I like it enough that I'm trying to trade my shiny new 35# stainless CQR for a Spade A100 for my 27000# trawler. Anyone want to buy it? Capt. Jeff |

The Spade is advertised to work in grass. The Bruce isn't. The Spade just lays on its side and drags over the grass. Even when I dived on it and stuck it into the bottom, it just flopped over and dragged. No wonder you are not happy with it. Capt. Jeff |

Why the A100 ? Weight rules when it's time to set quickly.

Actually I have no real complaint about the 35# CQR other than I prefer
the SPADE and want to swap for one. The A100 is rated for up to 52' boats and i'm always in sand on Lake Superior. I have never dragged and have a Fortress and Gaurdian for storm, although I'm not wild about them because they don't seem to want to reset as well when the wind/tide changes. Also, I like the lighter weight because it's easier on the windlass when I use it and i can pull it up fairly easily by hand if I want. And my Monk is bow heavy with a genset and any pounds I can take of that end of the boat is an improvement. So my stainless 35# CQR is still for sale. Capt. Jeff |

When did Lake Superior start having tides? Also, I like the lighter weight because it's easier on the windlass when I use it and i can pull it up fairly easily by hand if I want. Superior has always had a 3" tide!
But other places i have cruised, Alaska, British Columbia and even some places in Florida sure do. Capt. Jeff |

I'm in web hell, dialup neighborhood, so posting through google, and unable to respond (quirk of the system) to Glenn's post on the subject but since I'm changing the subject anyway, here I am outside that thread :{)) Glenn, you have me drooling - but with any luck, we'll be out at sea by that time. What's the likelihood of larger ones - our boat is 35k# - later? Thanks, and have a good time in the BVI! L8R We have a superMax which is sort of like a spade only with a claw type thing on it instead of a spade type thing. Ours is #55 for a #37k boat (about 48 feet) The boat came with a 35# CQR, a Danforth, a wishbone and a little dink anchor. We sold the wishbone and traded the 35# CQR for a 45# one. We have all chain rode. We have never used the other anchors - only the SuperMax. The only time we've had trouble is when the ground was rocky or when it was scoured. It's super in mud. Bob said he had read that the trawler group did some tests on the spade and couldn't get it to set very well, so that's why he didn't buy it. grandma Rosalie S/V RosalieAnn, Leonardtown, MD CSY 44 WO #156 http://home.mindspring.com/~gmbeasley/id1.html |
