Default Catalina 22 HIN

Can anybody tell me where to find the HIN on a Catalia 22?
Thanks

My C30 had it etched in the upper corner of the transom

I've looked at 3 of these C22's and I don't see the HIN where it belongs.
Talked to Catalina and they say that it is "etched" sorta into the gelcoat
where it should be but gets covered by paint etc. They looked up the hin
based on the S/N.
As to the 1972 law, I have a Gulf 32 Pilothouse 1976 that has no HIN
molded in nor did any of the older Gulf 32's.

All boats manufactured after (I think) 1972 have a HIN number and it is

always
located in the same place, which is the upper starboard side of the

transom.
Many boats have the same number etched elsewhere as a backup, but the

number
should always be in that spot. The exception is if the boat has had

fiberglass
repairs that involved the area where the HIN was. If the HIN in that area

is
obscured or missing, then you need to proceed with caution, as the boat

may be
stolen or be involved in some other legal "issue" of ownership.

Occasionally
someone will stupidly obscure that number in the course of repainting the

boat,
but it's a red flag and needs to be absolutely cleared up before purchase.

Larger boats, in particular sailboats, usually have the ID number on the
keel (in the bilge, top of the keel, you find it on the inside of the boat
!)

So they agree with me as to location, they just admit they did a lousy
job of etching. And what's this about a serial number? That should be
the same thing as the HIN.

Hull Identification Number

The Hull Identification Number (HIN) is a unique 12-14 digit number
(numbers and letters) assigned by the manufacturer to boats built
after 1972. (Like the Vehicle Identification Number / VIN on a car.)
It is engraved in the fiberglass or on a metal plate attached to the
upper right hand corner of the transom.
