The green stripe is 101 sanitary hose. It will be good for odor permeation
for several years. The white may be of three different types. 148 is a medium wall sanitation and general purpose hose that is subject to permeation rather quickly. 144 is slightly heavier walled with a hard vinyl spiral and will last a little longer. The third is AVS96 manufactured by AGS in Australia that SeaLand was once the exclusive dealer for. It ain't cheap but it is as good or better than 101. Actually resists odor permeation better than all of them. -- Glenn Ashmore I'm building a 45' cutter in strip/composite. Here is a message that appeared recently on the CS mailing list about hose replacement. I'm interested in your comments. What is the black hose with green stripes that he referred to? I have a lot of experience with this. In my CS 30 I replace the hose I think you're talking about with that white Head hose that is supposed to be the best hose for that job. It was brutal to work with and had to be heated to get it to fit over the fittings it was supposed to attach to. After hours and hours of just absolute brutal work I finished it. Within two months you could smell the head smells. Later I learned that hose will not work anywhere that water sits in the hose. The oder will come right through. Next boat next attempt. I used that black rubber hose with the green stripe on the outside and reinforced with wire. It is just as brutal to work with and extreemly expensive but, no smell after 2 years!!!!!!!! |

What is the black hose with green stripes that he referred to? I think Glenn already answered your question. In my CS 30 I replace the hose I think you're talking about with that white Head hose that is supposed to be the best hose for that job. Every mfr claims that their hose is the best. At one time Trident had the longest warranty on their #148 white hose in the industry--3 years. I'd had installed on one of my boats for more than 7 years without a trace of odor...used it on the next boat, it permeated in less than 90 days. There is one hose that has been proven in independent testing to be at least 16x more resistant odor permeation than ANY other hose on the planet: AVS 96 made by these folks http://www.aussieglobe.com/avs96.htm And it's the only hose I recommend. It was originally distributed exclusively in the US by SeaLand under their private label brand name "OdorSafe. However, shortly after Dometic—a European mfr who specializes primarily in RV equipment--acquired SeaLand from N.A. Taylor, SeaLand switched to an Italian hose mfr. Is it as good as AVS96? All I know is that AVS96 beat the socks off it in the aforementioned independent testing commissioned by SeaLand when they were selling AVS96 as their "OdorSafe" brand. They now only CLAIM—without any test results to back it up--that their new "OdorSafePlus" hose is 20% more resistant to odor permeation than MOST other hoses, and are not promoting it at all...in fact, have even begun recommending hard PVC for some installations, and now offer fittings to connect hard pipe to hose. Meanwhile, AussieGlobe http://www.aussieglobe.com/avs96.htm is now selling their AVS96 hose direct here in the US--and for a LOT less than SeaLand charged for it, or for their new OdorsafePlus...$5.50/ft, cut to any length vs. nearly $9/ft for SeaLand in min. 50' coils. Later I learned that hose will not work anywhere that water sits in the hose. The oder will come right through. Not quite true. Water won't permeate hose...it doesn't doesn't produce any gasses. It's WASTE left sitting in hoses that permeates 'em. The insides of hoses is anaerobic, so as waste sits in 'em, it produces methane and sulphur dioxide and hydrogen sulfide--stinky gasses. Even AVS96 isn't 100% "bulletproof" against that...but it does outlast all other hoses by years. That is, unless household or institutional chemical bowl cleaners, bleach or products containing bleach, pine oil cleaners, Lysol etc are flushed down the toilet...'cuz all the above breaks down ANY hose material. You can extend the life of any sanitation hose by thoroughly rinsing it out with clean fresh water any time the boat will sit. Next boat next attempt. I used that black rubber hose with the green stripe on the outside and reinforced with wire. It is just as brutal to work with and extreemly expensive but, no smell after 2 years!!!!!!!! And it may stay that way for another 10 years...or it may permeate next year...or never. As much has to do with the hose routing--low spots etc--as it does the hose itself. -- Peggie ---------- Peggie Hall Specializing in marine sanitation since 1987 Author "Get Rid of Boat Odors - A Guide To Marine Sanitation Systems and Other Sources of Aggravation and Odor" http://www.seaworthy.com/store/custo...0&cat=6&page=1 http://shop.sailboatowners.com/detai...=400&group=327 |
