For the first time ever, I am docked next to an identical boat, another
8.5 M S2. His boat seems to be a year newer but has nearly identical
lines. However, I have always suspected that my boat is slightly down
at the bow, that is, she doesnt float parallel to the indicated
waterline. His boat does float right. I have no excess weight in the
bow and try to concentrate weight in the stern so what is happening
here? Even when the mast was down she floated this way. My boat has
always been this way but I am just wondering.

Maybe he has extra weight in the stern instead of you having too much
in the bow.

You're talking 2 boats built a year apart ..... but take 2 boats built
side by side at the same time with identical spec.'s and you're apt to
run across the same thing ..... float different, handle different,
develop individual quirks.
Unless you are having a specific problem with the perceived "down by the
head" of your boat, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
BG You could always repaint/relocate your waterline......

Wonder if the fresh water/waste water/fuel tanks are in the same
locations on both boats?

I always thought that the bow of my S2 9.1 floated lower than the
bootstripe. Then I added another 15 gallon water tank under the cockpit sole
and it changed so that the bootstripe and the water became parallel.

Bow-down is a lot less problem than stern down when you're moving.
Enjoy! The "problem" is minor, and one that many racers would love to
have.

His engine is bigger than yours? More gas in the tank? An empty
head tank?

This seems interesting. Where should a waterline be painted?

At the place where the bottom dirt becomes noticable springs to my
mind. A boat will float where you want it to, if you have moveable
ballast. Should interior design intrude, ballast tanks are an
option, as would be lightweight exterior filler.

Or, maybe his line is painted right and yours is painted wrong. How
do they compare silouette wise, side by side? Masts parallel?
Weather helm the same?

I would try to make the boat float as best for low hull speed
steering, low speed limp home under kicker efficiency, and compare
that with other trim options at speed, all with an eye to
efficiency, then I would paint where the water says I should paint.

Designers might not like paint engineered to make a boat look good
on a trailer.
