Hi
I have to remove a rope starter on a Johnson 1988 9.9 2 stroke in order to get the carburator off. I have a service manual (3rd party) and in it they state that "extreme care" should be taken when removing the rope starter assembly, as the internal spring is extremely dangerous. Fine. No problem. Then the bonehead manual writer gives NO IDICATION WHAT SO EVER what I should or shouldn't do when removing the thing. It's held on with one big bolt through the center of the pinion gera and starter, and is located on the front starboard side of the engine. The starboard carb flange nut is not accessible unless I remove the rope starter. - Do I relieve pressure on the spring first by removing the starter rope handle and allowing it it retract? - Do I just pull out the bolt while holding the whole affair together so that it doesn't go "sproing" in my face? - Do I pull the starter rope out all the way and knot it so it can't go back in (got that from a web site, but it sounds to me like that ADDS tension, does not relieve it.) I really don't want to hurt myself taking this off and would appreciate feedback from someone who's done the job Thanks folks. |

Sorry, the starter is on the PORT side of the engine, not S.B. as I
mistakenly said. (need coffee now...too early) Doin it right wrote: Hi I have to remove a rope starter on a Johnson 1988 9.9 2 stroke in order to get the carburator off. In article ,

For instance, I've got a long-offset box wrench (called a carb wrench, as I recall) that let me get into some funny spots. Check the auto parts store. I have a service manual (3rd party) and in it they state that "extreme care" should be taken when removing the rope starter assembly, as the internal spring is extremely dangerous. Fine. No problem. I don't know the actual installation, but most of the small engine rope starters I've taken off were essentially a sealed unit. Pull 3 or 4 bolts, take the whole assembly off. Because you need to mount part of the system to something that doesn't move, I suspect if you look further, you'll see that you may not have to pull the obvious bolt. Whatever you do the first time, do it in an enclosed area where "sprong" parts can't escape. Remember, most of the assemblers and some of the "mechanics" aren't the brightest bulb in the pack, so you might be able to figure it out by looking carefully first. I have had it off several times with no problem. Just leave the bolt in it
to keep it together. Once removed, hold it from separating and you're golden. If you just want to access the carb nut then I don't even think you need to remove the rope or release the spring. tension just move it aside. It's not that hard, I did it with no manual and I'm no mechanic!! Ratchet "Doin it right" wrote in message .. . Thanks Ratchet!
I figured it was that simple but really appreciate hearing from someone who's done it. Ratchet wrote: I have had it off several times with no problem. Just leave the bolt in it to keep it together.
