Americans take ship back!

I heard this story break on the BBC World service early this morning,
that Somali pirates had hijacked a US flagged container ship and after a
battle lasting several hours had taken the ship,,,

Then on the way home this afternoon I hear on NPR that the American crew
had taken the ship back, but not the captain...

http://apnews.excite.com/article/200...D97EG5800.html

I wonder what happened, did the Americans, sick of terrorist jerks
taking whatever they want say "Enough, we're not going to roll over like
a bunch of underpaid Filipinos." "We're UNION, and no non-union crew is
gonna run this boat" :-)

Cheers
Martin

They apparently disabled the ship, presumably in a way that did not
encourage the pirates to sacrifice a crewman as an incentive to fix it
up again. With US warships heading for the area, not to mention
visitations by missile packing drones, they headed out with the Captain.

If you are wondering what happened simply ask the captain of the ship if he
is returned alive for $10 million.

Unions: always quick to shaft the management!

How come he is surrounded by half a dozen machine guns, only 4 pirates
attacked the vessel.
1 was captured, 3 remains with the captain.

A US Navy Destroyer and 3 fast ribs surround the lifeboat he is held
in.
The pirates should stick to capturing euro and mid east ships if they
expect to be paid ransoms.

I suspect the pirates will surrender, or be killed, before any money
is exchanged.

I have got a feeling there are one or two ways to both save the Captain
and deny the pirates their booty. We'll see!

I don't quite get it... seems to me that if the pirates are operating from
larger vessels in international waters (or not), why don't we go after the
larger motherships? They should be that hard to identify.

Come to think of it, that's not a bad idea - especially for
US flagged cruse ships.

Think of the stories passengers could tell when they get home!

Now that is a dandy idea. What would it take -- a platoon for each ship?
Like as not it would be considered a pretty cushy gig.

The Somalis have a perfect record against the US when a Democrat is
president. Do you actually believe Obama will set the rules of engagement so
that these poor, under privileged Somalis will be killed? Don't forget the
US Navy was repulsed by a throng of Haitian women while Clinton was
president. I bet those Somalis will recieve TARP money, healthcare and a
free college education all at the expense of the US taxpayer after they kill
or injure the captain. The US lost in Somalia under Clinton and will
probably surrender and pay reparations under the spineless Obama.

What drones. I don't believe there are any over there. There are some
RPV, remotely piloted vehicles, with a human operator who can tell
right from wrong. Just look for ladders in small boats.

This place would make a great "practice zone" for testing and training.
Someone ashore knows who these pirates are and what boats they use. SEALS
could take them out and noone would have any idea who it was.

A tax on shipping companies to pay for it would be nice, but I wouldn't
hold my breath....

Americans take ship back!

Shoot them in the head. Whats the problem, I don't see how the
pirates should beable to get with in a 1000 yards.

Being military trained, give me a rife (50cal) and the pirates would
get one chance not to get within a 1000 yard range. I can't see how
hard this is, yes I saw the news reports were the ships carry oil and
other flamable material and worry about fire arms aboard ship , but if
your going in area waters where this has happened 50 times this year.
where is the commen sense?

Yes I'm more then willing to join a crew at this time just to deal
with this problem.

Have you seen what the Press calls speed boats? These aren't
ChrisCrafts. Put a big enugh engine on a dory and it's a speed boat.

Seals swim in from sub at 0300 local and quietly burn 1" hole in bottom of
lifeboat then simply swim away. Panic ensues as lifeboat sinks for
unknown
reasons. As pirates swim away Seals simply sink them one at a time,
saving
ears, of course, like they did in 'Nam, all filmed by special Aljazeera
news crew with infrared cams offered free by US gummit to show other
pirates with sat TV/internet back on land. When last pirate jumps
overboard Seals waiting under lifeboat inflate floatation ring before tied
up captain drowns inside lifeboat.

I bet Seals have underwater torches you can't even hear burning steel
right
in front of you.

Taxpayers probably paid $10,000 each for them....dammit.

If you think CIA spooks are scary, it's because you've never met a real
US Navy SEAL.

SEALs present ears to astonished Aljazeera on-camera talking head while
staring into camera telling others watching their ear collection needs
expanding....

I'd suggest that they don't burn all the way through the hull. Just get it
very thin in several places. Shouldn't take long for it to go.

Major problems with firearms on commercial vessels trying to get in
and out of port without extensive delays for firm arm inspections,
approvals, etc.

OTOH, a couple of 1,000 HP Cummins diesels hooked up to fore and aft
located fire pumps with 1,500 GPM output thru a 6"-8" nozzle is a
whole "nuther" kettle of fish.

Bull****. Lifeboats are unsinkable, will float when full of water. I
crossed the atlantic, bed about fifteen feet from a lifeboat, and got
a good look at it. Talked to the crew as well. Lowering gear is pretty
complicated. They make a point of telling the passengers that there
are two lifeboat seats per person. They don't tell you that if the
ship has a fair list, you maybe can only launch half of them.
