Anyone have anything to say about this product. http://www.ronstan.com/marine/story.asp?story=2042 I have used a boom tent like this for about 8 years. Quite simple to make or have made. Use GoreTex for the tent. Sew in "sleeves" with re- inforced end pockets every 2' or 3' or so of length. Run a length of flexible fibre tent pole in each sleeve. Put a zipper in where you exit the cockpit. Drape over the top of the boom and bungee or nylon strap to lifelines. Works great. Last one cost me $250 to have made up. |

Helps with the Florida sun always and summer showers when we lived aboard. Mine has 1 1/2" PVC as bows, which get stored on the side of the shed and become little tubular apartments for all sorts of critters between uses. Something of a PITA to erect and tear down. Also have to be careful to keep chafing in place to avoid wearing through the sail cover. I think inflatable support would be very handy if the construction is robust enough to give a few years of service. I'm on my second tent, both made of Sunbrella and the first was came with that boat, I used it quite a bit and it went with the boat, still in good shape, after 2 years. I've had this one for 3 years (not as much use) and aside from restitching, expect to get a few more out of it. So, to me, the convenience would be nice but durability is more important. |

Can you say more about "flexible fibre tent poles". Where can I buy then and get specs? Do they break down into lengths suitable for storage belowdecks? My local camping store doesn't show anything longer than about 8 feet, and they are metal and don't sound very flexible. Thanks for your advice. |

They're sold at many camping and outdoor outfitters here in Canada, such as: http://www.fcsurplus.ca/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=3809 They have a metal ferrule on one end that is a female socket for the next length of pole. Put 4 of them together and they span my cockpit nicely. Put a length of shock cord through them and they keep nicely tight. In the first incarnation of this rig, I had cut access openings into the sleeves in order to seperate the centre joint so that the tent could be folded in half and stowed in a sail locker. This new one hasn't had that mod done to it yet, but it rolls up into a bundle about 4" in diameter and at eight feet can be stored in the v-berth with getting in the way of much. It's really been quite a good solution for us and quite sturdy. It has survived several Great Lakes storms 40kts over the past 8 years. Good luck with it. |
