Hi everyone,

I need a replacement foredeck hatch for my 1963 28 foot Owens. It's
the type that is metal, round with glass in it and has 3 arms
protecting the glass. I dropped the anchor on it, bent 2 arms and
fractured the glass which now leaks. The boat is a full restoration so
I would prefer an exact replacement if possible. If you know of one,
or of a boat being parted out or of any other soure, please let me
know. I think the hatches were all the same on these boats over a
period of 6 years, so my chances of finding one aren't too remote.
Just remove INVALID from the email address to reply. I live in
southern Florida so if you are in the area I can drive over to pick it
up. Thanks,

Ron Wilson

Replace it with this. Only 75 dollars on Ebay.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Custom-Mickey-Mouse,-Toilet-Seat,-Cut-Aluminum-Design!_W0QQitemZ370134895859QQcmdZViewItem

It would look real nice on your garbage scow.

Wilbur Hubbard

There's always a wise guy in the crowd and I guess you are him. I
bought my boat 8 years ago, she was in pretty bad shape. Fortunately,
the wood was in pretty good shape. I stripped her down completely and
replaced or restored everything over a period of 4 years. I must have
put in over 2,000 hours of work into her, it payed in satisfaction and
not in dollars. In 2005 I fired up the new Chevy 327 in her and took
her out for the first of a series of sea trials. No leaks, just a few
things shaking loose. I'm sure if you could see her you would regret
your Mickey Mouse toilet seat comments. If you find a hatch let me
know, I'll buy you a new toilet seat.

Ron Wilson

And there's always a jerk in every crowd who thinks IDLE SPEED/NO WAKE zones
don't apply to him and his big wake producing boat. Nobody else really cares
about your project boat. What people like to see is a responsible boater who
obeys the law. And get some water lift mufflers on that thing. It makes
enough noise to wake up the dead.

Wilbur Hubbard

You don't let up do you? If people weren't nice and didn't care I
wouldn't be getting some very helpful advice from people would I? I
always go through no wake zone at less than 4 knots, except on one
ocassion. I had some bad fuel and had to run it at higher RPM to keep
from stalling. There was a wake in the marina and I posted a notice at
the club house offering to pay for any damages. No one made any claims
until 3 weeks later when someone whose boat wasn't in the marina or
even within a quarter mile of the incident claimed my wake broke his
onboard notebook computer. He was obviously taking advantage of my
goodwill so I refused to pay. Next thing I know he's taking me to
court. It was cheaper to pay him than to go to court so I did. Other
than that I exercise extreme care for others. Mufflers are not
original equipment on the boat and can cause more problems than they
fix. I also happen to enjoy the sound of the engine. Are you always so
cranky? Lighten up a bit before you get an ulcer. If you find a hatch
for me I'll get you some Pepto-Bismol for your stomach and some Midol
for your cramps.

Might try Sailorman in Ft Lauderdale or Dons Salvage in Clearwater.

Thank you, I've tried Sailorman but haven't heard of Don's salvage.

Ron Wilson

Don's has a lot of good stuff. They get new stock from discontinued models
as well as salvage. The couple times I've been there I ended up bringing
home a trunk full of stuff I didn't know I needed....
Good luck.

People like Ron are usually way to cheap to actually buy things. He'd rather
go around and mooch things for free. His boat looks like a wreck. That
particular model was ugly when it was brand new. A forty-five year old wood
boat??? What good is that?

Wilbur Hubbard

Damn! I reinstalled my Newsgroup reader (in Virtualbox) and forgot to
re-install Willy-Boy's permanent kill filter so here he is again......
Just as stupid as he was before I kill-filed him.

I reckon he must be one of those ol-boys that jest can't learn.
Aw well, back he goes in the Kill File.

Cheers,

Bruce

If its not too badly bent, why not re-glaze the existing hatch?

The problem is 2 of the 3 arms protecting the glass were bent and then
broke in 2 when I tried straightening them out. If I can't find a
replacement I will reglaze and have 3 new arms machined from some
aluminum stock. The cost of machining greatly exceeds my anticipated
cost of the hatch. But thanks for the helpful suggestion.

Ron Wilson

Fair enough. You didn't mention they had broken ;-(

For further reference, copper (brass/bronze) and aluminium alloys are
nearly all 'hot short', i.e. if you try to bend them hot, they *will*
tend to break, but if you'd heated the bars first, dull red hot for
copper alloys and till a streak of ordinary soap blackens for aluminium
alloys, you might well have annealed them enough to straiten them
successfully. Any chance they might be brazed or welded successfully?

I'm still not quite clear if the frame is aluminium alloy or bronze. I'm
leaning towards aluminium at the moment due to your choice for possible
parts. If you are willing to settle for rectangular bars of an off the
shelf section, why not do it yourself? Shouldn't be more than an hour's
work with a hacksaw and a file to make a straight bar to fit nicely.
With care and some paraffin or even WD40 as a cutting oil, aluminium is
easy enough to tap by hand for the fixings so you might even be able to
do it all on board and save the hassle of removing the hatch.

Wilbur is believed by many to be the new alias of Capt. Neil, the
alt.sailing.asa troll of yesteryear. Infamous for his yellow Coranado
aground on a reef of discarded light beer cans and his ubiquitous ceder
bucket, used for *all* purposes including the washing up, he flooded
sailing groups with the same style of garbage Wilbur does until every
regular killfiled him except when we were bored and fancied some
extremely coarse fishing . . . . For his quality of verbiage and
unsavoury personal habits, he was known as Anal Discharge Neil or the
'Good' Crapton. ADN vanished, 'Wilma' appeared and the posts continued
to emanate from an orifice in his nether regions.

If by some miracle he *does* come up with a hatch for you, make sure the
toilet seat you owe him is natural unvarnished ceder and sized to fit
his bucket! You are more likely to see a KKK rally supporting Obama on
the whitehouse lawn first though.

Ron,
marinerecycle@ yahoogroups.com would be a good place to post your
requirement.
If you can't find a replacement and want a copy, a CNC machine shop could
probably make a new frame out of a big hunk of aluminum. Might be big $$.

The idle speed/no wake law makes no exceptions for bad fuel, thunderstorms,
cold weather, testing the tune-up, etc. You're an idiot! You and others like
you act like you're some sort of privileged class the law doesn't apply to.
You get to do as you damned well please anytime you feel like. Well, the law
DOES apply to you. The next time you're having motor problems that make it
so you can't obey the law then stop and call TowBoat US or SeaTow. Spend
some money you cheapskate instead of waking innocent, law-abiding boaters
and then trying to weasel out of your obligations to be responsible for any
damage your wake caused.

Wakes travel a long, long way, you idiot! Anytime you see anchored boats in
Florida the law states that you must slow down to idle speed when you're
withing 100 yards of them. Stupid people haven't a clue about how to operate
a boat safely. You must also slow down to idle speed within the same
distance of mangrove trees, shorelines and docks. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Only a selfish creep thinks his waking the hell out of anchored boats and
docked boats is OK just because his crap motor won't run at idle speeds.
Next time use your head and stop showing your ass.

He was obviously taking advantage of my
goodwill so I refused to pay.

You define good will as waking the hell out of a hundred or so boats. You're
very lucky nobody else demanded restitution. Maybe if you'd had to pay
several thousand dollars out of pocket you'd be less selfish and more law
abiding. And some good will you have there, buddy. Post a lame notice with a
bogus phone number and then attempt to fade away into the woodwork. Well, it
so happens your real information is easily gotten from your registration
number.

Next thing I know he's taking me to
court. It was cheaper to pay him than to go to court so I did.

It would have been far cheaper if only you'd obeyed the law. I get so tired
of selfish, manipulating idiots like you. I see half-dozen of you jerks
every week. Each of you has their own idiotic excuse. "This is a jet-ski -
it doesn't make a wake." "My little inflatable? It makes less wake when on
a plane than when going slow." "Oh, I just had a tune up and had to check to
see if the motor would top out." None of them, when they entered the
channel, bothered to read the posted sign stating Idle Speed/No Wake. How
do any of the above lame excuses comply with the Idle Speed part of the law?
Huh? I can't hear you. Probably because you didn't hear me because your
unmuffled boat blasts your eardrums out with 150 decibels. Stupid jerk!

Other
than that I exercise extreme care for others.

Liar!

Mufflers are not
