Default Approximate cost of safe slip near NYC

Greetings:

We pay about $5000 per year to use our boat June-Sept among the 22
Apostle Islands of Lake Superior. I teach and have the summers off
and am trying to get ideas for places our family could go and spend
the summer, hopefully saving money in the process.

Along the Great Lakes is there anywhere you would suggest, we dream
about New York City.

Would we need a slip or do folks anchor out?

Thanks
Christian

There are moorings and a dinghy dock at the 79th Street Boat Basin on
the Hudson River. The river gets very rough at times however, and I
don't think you'd be happy there for long. It's convenient to
mid-town though, a quick taxi or subway ride and you're right in the
heart of the city.

There are several marinas on the New Jersey side worth considering:

http://www.libertylandingmarina.com/

http://www.lincolnharbormarina.com/ (expensive but convenient)

Both have ferry boats/water taxis to NYC.

30 miles north up the Hudson is Tarrytown Marina with convenient train
transportation into mid-town Manhattan via Metro North:

Going towards Long Island Sound there is Wright Island Marina in New
Rochelle with good trains to NYC although you need to take a taxi to
the station:

Also heading towards LIS is the Flushing Bay Marina near the old
World's Fair site:

http://newyork.citysearch.com/profil...ir_marina.html

It has good subway transportation into mid-town Manhattan.

A little further out on LIS but still close, there are several marinas
in Manhasset Bay:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...rinas&aq=f&oq=

They have transportation via the Long Island Rail Road.

If you are a member of a recognized Yacht Club you might consider
renting a guest mooring at Larchmont or one of the Manhasset Bay
Clubs. There are also clubs on City Island but transportation from
there into Manhattan is round about.

Ouch, for about 2K you can get a slip, storage, haul in, haul out,
electricity, water and unlimited sewage pumping in Kingston Ont. You
get to sail Lake Ontario and the Thousand Islands. Take the stick down
and you can do the Trent-Severn or the Rideau to Ottawa. A days sail
from Sackets Harbour, Oswego, Clayton, Boldt Castle.......

CORK in July and August.....

Cheers
