Default right prop for mercury?

hi all,
have a question to help out a friend; he's a powerboater, im a sailor.
we're both living in mt isa, queensland australia, a remote mining town with
a big lake. a couple of weeks ago he ran his little ski boat over some
rocks in the lake, the water level has been dropping with the drought.
anyway, to cut a long story short he wrecked his prop and needs a
replacement but were about 1600kms from the next big town, so we're looking
at stuff on ebay.

the boat is a haines bermuda, im guessing about 17 feet? the motor is a
mercury 2 stroke 90hp, the current prop measuers 11 1/2" in diameter and is
marked 19P. he never really uses it for skiing, just goes out on weekends,
tools around the lake for laughs, does the odd bit of fishing. Ive seen
lots of mercury props going, but none that match his, wondering what will
fit and work well. Ive seen 17P, 21P as well as a 22P chopper prop, as well
as a 19P prop off a stern drive.

in real world terms, how much can you go up or down in pitch without
noticing much difference? is a 21 a big step up from a 19? would he lose
much speed by going down to a 19? and what is a chopper prop anyway?

Is it true that yamaha props fit mercuries?

sure glad i sail.

Shaun
