Cleaning and painting bilge
Will pouring bleach in the bilges followed by copious rinsing of water
harm anything ? Thank you. Ilv2sl wrote: While we have our 35' glass sloop, out of the water, I want to paint the bilge, and have a few questions: What is best to clean the bilge with? The bilge has had oil, in it at times, and has a lot of stains. Many areas of the full keel are only reached by brush. What paint is the best to use? I have never applied Gel Coat. IT this an option? Any ideas would be great to hear. Thanks |

Cleaning and painting bilge
I would dilute the bleach first with water. Mabey 1/2 cup to 5 gallons
of water. This will kill mildew. SteveJ Courtney Thomas,,, wrote: Will pouring bleach in the bilges followed by copious rinsing of water harm anything ? Thank you. Bleach is an "antibactial" and stain remover...it has no cleaning or oil emulsifying properties whatever. And what you need is something (detergent/degreaser) that does emulsify oils. Nor will bleach in any dilution emulsify oil, diesel or any petroleum product so that it can be washed away. Most effective is a 500ppm (free chlorine) solution made with about 13 ounces of bleach (5.25% sodium hypochlorite) per gallon of water, with about 6 ounces of vinegar to acidify it. That said, if there's oil in the bilge, the chlorine solution will be almost, if not totally, ineffective for sanitization, and as Peggy points out, will not solubilize, emulsify, or otherwise remove the oil.
