Thanks for the advice.
Although I would love to replace the Atomic Four its just not an option... we'd probably sell the boat first. The good news is that we just need the engine to get us out of the slip for the most part. So I'm thinking an outboard will be fine for our this. (Just day cruiser) So I've priced some engines, but would be interested what advice you could give on the engine mounts. Is this going to be a real hassle? Thanks again, Kevin San Diego, Newport 27 Lloyd Sumpter wrote: http://www3.telus.net/Atomic_4_Eng_Service/index.htm Or, if you can wait till spring, I may have an M25 that would suit you well - it's too wimpy for my 36-ft sailboat, but would push a 27ft-er just fine. There are LOTS of 27-footers with outboards: I had an outboard on my Cal 25. Never had it swamped, but prop-out-of-the-water was a problem. MUCH cheaper than rebuilding or replacing the inboard, though! You would be better off with no engine than use an outboard. Heres why: In a seaway, the engine will get dunked; that's all you need another dead engine. Removing the engine when sailing is possible but something most people will do once. A proper bracket to hold the outboard on the stern will cost you a couple of bucks. Under power the propeller will be repeatedly out of the water if there is ANY sea running. If the engine is an Atomic 4 you are in luck, lots of parts available and lots of rebuilt engines available. Good Luck with your decision Dave "Kevin" wrote in message om... I'm a newbie sailor. We have a 27' Newport, 4 cyl inboard (Atomic?) The engine is very dead... and not economical to repair. (Cost more than value of boat) We would like leave the engine as is, and mount an outboard engine to assist with day cruising. Could you recommend HP + how to go about mounting an outboard? Also would we it be a fixed mount or ??? Thanks so much for any advice. |
