Blair,
I started a project boat a couple of months ago and have found that most of the people here are willing to help with as much info as you need. I would suggest finding a copy of a book called "Runabout Renovations" by Jim Anderson. Books A Million should be able to help. Also check out www.fiberdoc.com ,the staff there has been very helpful also. It's not as hard to do as you might think,,,,just very dirty,,,, but the rewards are worth it I'm now getting ready to start another boat,,28' off-shore rig. Phil Jax,FL. |

Hi Blair,
First, get out your checkbook. Next make sure you have a good supply of vasiline before going to the local boat parts store. If you have never worked with fiberglass yourself, you should concider paying a professional, or at least getting a book or two on the subject. Fiberglass is tricky stuff until you get the hang of it. You can likely have the deck chairs re-covered and re-foamed at the local auto upholstry shop for a lot less then buying new. If the boat has had water in it for a long time, you may want to wreck out the deck, replace the stringers underneath it, and cover over with a good grade of marine plywood and some spar varnish. (Yes there is a difference between marine grade and regular exterior plywood. Its the glue its made from.) Adding some wood to the boat will give it a classy look too. Capt. Foam the bottom and re-do some fiberglass, Anyone who has done this type of work, could youi offer any advice as to what key things need to be done in order to have a well restored boat on my hands?.. ( I dont wanna do a half-assed job only to find i need to redo it over again ).. any info or suggestions would be great.. as best I know, I have to guy the inside of the boat and redo it..
