Thanks to all who took the time to answer, even those who didn't read
the original post. ;-) You've given me a couple of avenues worth
pursuing.

If using a cheap dust mask and you insist on making it seal, use painter's
blue masking tape to seal it ...it works and comes off without taking your
hide with it, but it means the mask is stuck on for awhile and that's a
hassle. I like my coffee and taking fresh air breaks now and then. Best
solution is to buy a reasonably high quality respirator with soft rubber
seal that form fits to your face better.

I'd have to agree with this, too.

If your job lasts for more than a few days, you could actually save
money with the more expensive rubber mask with cartridges. When I used
to use the paper masks, I'd go through about four in a day, mainly
because they would kinda get all bent up and wouldn't seal because I,
like Brian, like to take the mask off and take a break at least every
30 min. when working hard.
