Doug, Not sure but I think they had a unfinished Flying Tiger 7.5 at
the show. The boat I saw that looked like a 7.5 was in the water but had no rig, hatches, deck hardware etc. No rep was there so I'm not sure. Looked like it would be a hoot. I checked out the new Andrews 28 and it looked like a winner. |

I've been following the Flying Tiger story at "Sailing Anarchy" and they've got the first FT 7.5 sailing, they said they couldn't get it to Annapolis. Maybe they did! I'm going to be looking for a good chance to check them out this spring. It looks a lot better for what I want than the Melges 20 and cheaper too. I rejected a 2nd-hand Rocket 22, built by the same people who are building the Andrews 28. Man they do a great job. The biggest problem with the Rocket is the lack of keel crane and no shallow-water capability (common to most sportboats, though) and the guy trying to sell it was a major-league dick. It's a really cool boat, deserves to be a popular class. So, are you thinking Andrews 28 instead of Annapolis 30? It could be a few more years before the A30 makes a real-life appearance! Here is the boat that I thought might be the new little Flying Tiger.
After seeing the photo (different perspective) I don't think it is. http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/ind...=post&id=85799 |

Yeah, I'm not enthusiastic about throwing money into that 50% drive-it- off-the-lot depreciation, either. I've only ever bought one new boat, it worked out OK but certainly wasn't LESS work to get it up to snuff as any 2nd-hand boat I've ever had. OTOH some builders are different... a good friend of mine bought a brand-new Nickels Lightning back in the '90s, had it delivered to a regatta. The Nickels van & boat arrived that Friday night, they set the boat up & tuned the rig, he sailed it the next morning taking some silver... said it was perfect from the git-go. There are a few Flying Tiger 10s showing up on the 2nd hand market already. It might not be that long a of a wait for one of the little ones to come up for sale. Last winter I spent some time hunting around among the sportboats on the market... seems like about $25k is the lowest the Melges 24 guys will take, and the older boats are clapped-out junkers. A brand-new boat doesn't sound that bad in comparison! Fresh Breezes- Doug King |
