talk about boats as I please. On the other hand where are your
contributions to this thread that show any maturity? The thread is
sailing oriented and some people have sensible and worthwhile
comments. You are just one of the people trolling it.

Don't beat up on BS. He's got his share of problems, which are quite

Yea, like the problem of asking three different members to MEET with
Gayanzy, and then when they had no "interest" in him he gets mad and

capability (common to most sportboats, though) and the guy trying to
sell it was a major-league dick. It's a really cool boat, deserves to
be a popular class.

So, are you thinking Andrews 28 instead of Annapolis 30? It could be a
few more years before the A30 makes a real-life appearance!

Yeah, I'm not enthusiastic about throwing money into that 50% drive-it-
off-the-lot depreciation, either. I've only ever bought one new boat,
it worked out OK but certainly wasn't LESS work to get it up to snuff
as any 2nd-hand boat I've ever had. OTOH some builders are
different... a good friend of mine bought a brand-new Nickels
Lightning back in the '90s, had it delivered to a regatta. The Nickels
van & boat arrived that Friday night, they set the boat up & tuned the
rig, he sailed it the next morning taking some silver... said it was
perfect from the git-go.

There are a few Flying Tiger 10s showing up on the 2nd hand market
already. It might not be that long a of a wait for one of the little
ones to come up for sale.

Last winter I spent some time hunting around among the sportboats on
the market... seems like about $25k is the lowest the Melges 24 guys
will take, and the older boats are clapped-out junkers. A brand-new
boat doesn't sound that bad in comparison!

82'nd type of boat that he had sailed on. He has had two or three

since. So he is well on the way to 100!!

I guess that I have sailed on about 15 different models.



My experience is mainly based on a single boat. Fortunately,
I seem to have made the right choice.

Yes and No!

I was lucky enough to belong to a club that had a real
ethos of giving "experience" to its members. I managed
6, or 8 Channel crossings in different boats before I bought
my boat. When I went to buy the boat, I took two of the
club's most experienced sailors to help me spec it. I only
overruled them on one item. They said that I should go for
the aluminium toerail. I went for the pretty teak toerail. I
was wrong!




As I see it, you have two choices.
1) Go for your ultimate boat!
2) Buy something "safe" so that you can learn
about your real requirements.

My advice is to take choice 2).

Not sure I get what you're saying. Don't buy the boat you really
really want, that will do the tasks you really want to undertake? That
sounds like the safest course to me, rather than buying something
smaller & cheaper & less suitable, just to gain experience... at a
large cost in dollars & time!

It really depends on how sure JL is about what he wants.
I was fairly confident, and history has not proved me wrong.
However, I can see that it could easily have gone the other way.

A mistake could prove expensive. For this reason, I think
that JL should "dip his foot in the water".

I haven't kept track, but it is interesting to compare the different
characterisitics of different types of boats. And little things can
make a difference in "cruisability" like handholds around the
companionway or good place to hang a wet jacket. Little things can be
modified & changed (to some extent) too.

That sounds great, and obviously gave you a good basis for choice... I
think JL is on a similar path with taking lessons, chartering, and
(hopefully) delivering & crewing, before committing to purchase.

Pretty = good
I just spent a few days working on our varnish.. yes it's a PITA, yes
it's worth it IMHO
