============ The Old Guard ===========

Usenet does, indeed, have an old guard. Wiki defines an old guard as
follows: "in colloquial terms, a veteran or group of veterans; a
conservative faction; an aged segment."

The Usenet old guard is a group of veterans (read dinosaurs). They are a
conservative faction that abhors change and they definitely are an aged
segment that can't seem to understand that things change. These
lumbering anachronisms still attempt to police Usenet and still attempt
to bend it to their senile will. They form a clique of control freaks
whose only mission in life it to keep Usenet the same as it was fifteen
or twenty some odd years ago when they first dipped in a toe to test the
waters.

They all sound the same. They all use the same tired terminology and
they all try to enforce the same tired mores. Their slang is identical.
Their clever-only-to-themselves acronyms are so passé. They sound like
so many language police clones and mind-numbed robots. They are all in
their forties, fifties and sixties. They seem to have no other life but
Usenet. Their senile presence represents to those of us who are tired of
the same old thing a fraud and a hindrance.

They attempt to stifle creativity. They seem to think their staid and
stupid AUK awards for this and that are clever and endearing. They think
people take them seriously and dread having their fickle finger of fate
farce foisted upon them.

Nothing could be further from the truth. Modern day Usenetizens laugh at
you old folks. You are laughable. You are pitiable. Your very presence
stinks up the joint.

Face it, you old guard has-beens! Nobody takes you seriously except a
small minority of other such hangers-on whose time has come - - - and
GONE!

As evidenced in these newsgroups, the Aratzios, the Phlat_arses, the
Cannons, Leylands, Burnores, Bunyips and other such mealy-mouthed has-
beens need to stop acting like they are the role models, the rule
makers, the Usenet graduates entitled to be worshiped by the plebes.

They need to realize they are no longer needed, not wanted and
detrimental to a developing Usenet. They need to let it go. They need to
stop trying to browbeat and control and they need to stop trying to
stagnate Usenet so it remains the same comfy place in which they have
wasted so many years of their pathetic, stunted lives.

They managed to straightjacket Usenet and force their limited, old guard
understanding of it onto everybody for way too many years. At first they
were looked up to because they were actually somewhat useful so many
years ago when Usenet was being ordered and defined. But now they
represent a drag, an encumbrance and a divisive factor. They just don't
realize that Usenet has evolved. They expect it to remain forever what
it was in THEIR heyday; such is their arrogance. They are completely out
of touch with reality. Clearly they just don't get it. They continue to
accuse others of that which they are guilty - not keeping up.

Hey, you old guard, the time has come to let go. To recognize you are no
longer needed nor are you wanted. Go away gracefully. Stop trying to
define the indefinable. Stop with your power trip already. The longer
you hang on, the more you will end up being despised.

I have spoken and I know of what I speak.

I can understand why the old time regs of alt.sailing.asa think Neal
is a whiny little man.
