How can you teach science and not use SI units? A real fine group of

Well, the British schools did it for several centuries. Of course, they
also schlepped everything around using horse-drawn wagons.

Now that we're well into the 19th century, the time has long since
passed to start using modern conviences like a measurement system that
makes sense.

As an excercise in frustration everyone should be forced to do a few
basic physics problems using pounds, slugs, poundals, pound-feet. ..etc.

Be sure to state the results in furlongs per fortnight.

Marty,

A very good question. I don't have an answer for you. Just to many
people are scared to death about the change over. We do have a lot of
Neal types that refuse to change.

By the way; I've almost changed over and use factors for English. I
still have a lot of trouble with linear measurements. I convert to
metric after I cut the plank. Sorry.

The problem is teaching the comparison...it's just like learning a
language..if you're translating in your head all the time you'll never
be able to speak...you just have to learn it flat out and use it that
way and not think linear...same with temperatures...the system does more
to hinder learning by making the comparison when none is needed...I hate
it when elementary texts define a meter as "a bit more than a
yard"....What's that supposed to mean?

I installed three compact fluorescent's; that should take care of my

Besides, it's all over in 2012 anyway.

Hey Thom. you know the saying 'measure twice, cut once'? Do it in inches and
centimetres as well then you will be quite sure...

The problem is that no matter how much Tom cuts off it's still too short.
