I bought one of those CD Geiger counters, a reconditioned and tested one, almost new in the box, a while back. Loads of fun, but so far not a lot of radioactivity around to discover. Guess I'll have to wait until Ahmadinijad does some atmospheric testing. Max You can test smoke alarms... No good for radon, though. Radon emits mostly alpha particles, and the aluminum shield over the sensing tube stops 'em. Max |

Ya need the big stuff--the beta particles and gamma rays from nuclear decay--to register on a CD Geiger counter. Of course by the time you get a good, solid reading, you've been sufficiently dosed to witness your hair eventually falling out, cataracts forming in your eyes, and your teeth departing your gums.
