Default Problems in the Coast Guard

Steve wrote:
The problem is that the Coast Guard has been dragged into the
Department of Defense. Everything will be much more expensive. Those
old big cutters from the 60's were generations ahead of their time,
using CODAG power plants. They have been in reliable service for over
40 years. The USCG got its start as the Revenue Cutter Service, mainly
to stop rum runners and smugglers.

I say turn the Coast Guard over to private industry.

All towing and maintaince to aids to navigation I agree.

They can maintain
the bouys, do the rescues and all that.

I would not trust a private firm to do rescues.

The USCG is so far from its
original roots it is pathetic.

No ones running rum anymore, whatcha expect?

Why are they in Iraq? Why send them to
VietNam?

Maybe they are better at harbor security / police operations..
